The Six IIM Alumni report 2013 – Part one (Locations, Companies and Functions)

Last year we had released a series of reports on the alumni of the top B schools we cover, slicing aggregate data from LinkedIn by company, location and organizational function. When we released these reports, they created quite a stir. People were amazed by the new avenues for data exploration, and the insights opened up by a few mouse clicks on LinkedIn.

As always, we begin the first report in this year’s series with a vote of thanks to Reid Hoffman and Co (founders of LinkedIn).

It is a well-known secret that the Alumni effect is quite powerful in top recruiters – B school alumni (also referred to as ‘mafia’ or ‘The Mob’) wield significant influence over the hiring policy in top companies. The objective of these reports is to uncover the extent to which your B school’s mafia have infiltrated various companies, including your dream companies. This information is pretty useful because alumni presence influences your chances of joining these companies, whether you are a prospective MBA candidate, an MBA student or an alumnus of any of these B schools. We hope you use these reports to understand the general trend, please don’t reply to us fuming about minor numerical discrepancies, seeking introduction to contacts etc.

Methodology

We have considered people who have mentioned the six older IIMs as part of their ‘Education’ between 1997 and 2013 on their LinkedIn profile as our universe. This report focuses on three aspects of this universe (top ten locations where they work, top 20 companies where they work and main organizational functions). The time period for the study, 1997 to 2013 – includes 17 batches of the flagship program at these IIMs(14 and 15 in case of IIM I and IIM K). This period has been divided into two nearly equal parts – 1997-2004, and 2005-2013.

Clarifications and caveats

  1. No double counting: The data reflects the organization where the professionals are currently working and not the history of organizations where they have worked. For. e.g. if someone had worked at McKinsey till 2010, and is now working at BCG, that person will be counted only once, and be counted under BCG. This will reflect aggregate figures accurately, except in case of people who have forgotten to update their LinkedIn profiles.
  2. Fake profiles: Since data is user-generated and not verified independently, it cannot be 100% accurate. There may be a few fake profiles, but they are rendered insignificant due to the large sample size which means they will not distort the general trend.
  3. Other issues: The data includes all those who have attended a management programme at these institutes. Need not necessarily be the flagship PGP. Could also be the Executive MBA programme, or even the MDP at these IIMs. In 2005 IIM Bangalore started a PGD in Software Enterprise Management – to train professionals in the IT industry. IIM Calcutta also did something similar. More damningly, it could also include people who have done a three-day certificate course. How do we get rid of this error? We eliminate this by looking at a small bunch of dream companies in subsequent reports, where it is practically impossible to get in without doing a flagship MBA from a top B school.
  4. Not a job, just an internship: The data includes current PGP students doing their summer internships, for which the data has been reported as the company where they are doing the internship.

Data and Analysis

IIM Ahmedabad (1997-2004: 2964 students, 2005-2013: 8494 students)

The analysis

It not difficult to see the trend in IIM Ahmedabad’s data – a generational shift from investment banking to strategy consulting. In the early 2000s, students used to flock to investment banks in droves. In the batches from 1997-2004, there are five banks in the top eleven companies. That has now changed, and for the later batches (2005-2013), we see that consulting is clearly top draw. The ramping up of BCG’s operations is clearly evident – only 13 graduates from the 1997-2004 batches, and now among the top three companies with IIM Ahmedabad alumni. Among functional areas, finance was top choice for the batches between 1997 and 2004; now it is sales, followed by consulting.

IIM Bangalore (1997-2004: 3109 students, 2005-2013: 9489 students)

The analysis: IIM B started programs for IT industry professionals in 2005. This, and to a lesser extent Bangalore’s status as Silicon valley of India probably explains the preponderance of technology firms in this list. Again, the trend of shift from investment banking towards consulting is evident – from both, the companies list as well as the functional specialization data. Citi, Standard Chartered, Deutsche, HSBC etc, all have sizeable numbers from the 1997-2004 batches, they are not to be seen in the 2005-2013 data set. Goldman Sachs has 44 employees from the second set – more than half of them working out of Bangalore in what is most probably a middle-office role rather than a front end role. BCG is bottom of the list in the 1997-2004 data set, McKinsey is not even in the list. Both are found somewhere in the middle of the second data set. The second set also sees the emergence of some tech companies with a refreshingly higher ‘cool quotient’ than Indian IT players – Yahoo and Amazon.

IIM Calcutta (1997-2004: 3179 students, 2005-2013: 11,340 students)

The analysis: Again, there is a predominance of IT service firms, mostly due to their running management training programs for their employees in conjunction with IIM C. The transition from investment banking to strategy consulting is evident, but less pronounced. BCG, which seemed to have rapidly ramped up its hiring from IIM A and IIM B between 2005 and 2013, is missing from the second list at IIM C. Airtel and Microsoft have hired heavily from IIM C.

IIM Lucknow: (1997-2004: 1927 students, 2005-2013: 5273 students)

Analysis: Data is not as heavily influenced by non-flagship programs, as the earlier two IIMs. Again, we see evidence of a secular shift from finance to consulting. Not so visible among top recruiters, but clearly visible in aggregate data.

IIM Indore: (1997-2004: 586 students, 2005-2013: 3929 students)

The Analysis: Aggregate data indicates shift towards consulting. However, a look at the movements in list of top recruiters is interesting. It indicates that Indian banks (ICICI, Axis and Yes Bank) have been on an expansion spree, and they have been quite happy to lap up the banking and finance crowd in large numbers. Also, the roles at Deutsche Bank and HSBC offered at IIM Indore are usually middle-office, indicating two trends within banking in India over the years from 2005 to 2013:

  1. Hiring has been weak among foreign investment banks for their front-end roles.
  2. Hiring is robust among two constituencies – Indian retail banks looking to expand, and foreign investment banks (mainly JP Morgan, Deutsche Bank and HSBC) looking to cut costs by outsourcing some of their supporting operations to India.

IIM Kozhikode: (1997-2004: 977 students, 2005-2013: 3254 students)

Analysis: Consulting rules the roost at IIM K and IIM I, with the big names being Deloitte and Accenture. Bulk of the remaining professionals may be into IT consulting. Just like IIM I, banking has shown a strong presence at IIM K, for reasons already discussed.

Locations: All IIMs, apart from IIM Bangalore and IIM K (the southern IIMs) have the largest alumni base of their senior alumni (1997-2004) in Mumbai. Among many IIMs, there is a generational shift towards NCR over Mumbai as the top job location. It could be that Mumbai is losing out on India’s best and brightest to New Delhi. On the other hand, it could also mean that NCR is where all the grunt work is done by new joinees, before they rise up the ranks and get promoted to a job posting in Mumbai.

Which Are The Dream Companies On Top Business School Campuses? – InsideIIM Recruitment Survey 2016 – Part 12

We conclude our Recruitment Survey Results with the announcement of this year’s list of Dream Companies. These companies have been declared by Aspirants, Business School Students and Alumni as their Dream companies across all sectors, functions and locations. We asked all three categories of respondents to name their top 5 Dream companies. They were asked to type the names of companies and no list was provided to choose from.

You will not find a big difference in the list when compared to the previous year. In fact, you will see that while positions have changed within the top 10, there is hardly any change over the last 3 years. Check 2014 Data here or check 2012 results here.

Unilever has never dropped out of the top 5 for any respondent category over the last 5 years. Mckinsey & Co. and BCG have rarely dropped out of the top 5 in the last 5 years for any respondent category. TAS, Google, P&G are other names who have never dropped out of top 10.  Amazon, Goldman Sachs and Facebook are very strong names which will figure almost every year. Aditya Birla Group is generally quite strong among the graduating class – probably because of the Young Leader’s Programme. Microsoft, ITC, Mahindra, Deloitte and JPMC are other names which are have been in the top 10 multiple times even if a few of them miss out this year.

Dream companies are brands which are built slowly over the years and a lot of things need to align for this to happen. Only if there is consistently good feedback from alumni, professors, current employees etc. can such a brand positioning be sustained. This is combined with factors like good compensation, a challenging work place and a sustained employer branding outreach programme. While it is not surprising to see international companies feature so prominently in this list, it is heartening to see Indian companies like TAS, ABG and ITC make their presence felt quite strongly against the global behemoths with glamorous brands.

Celebrating Womanhood On InsideIIM – Miti Vaidya – XLRI Alumna

Women’s day is round the corner, and Team InsideIIM interviewed some women who inspire us.

In the next few days, every day, we will bring you the story of a woman who is out there standing strong and high, carving her way in this tough world. What drives them, what are their opinions about things, and some words of wisdom.

“Here’s to strong women. May we know them, may we raise them.”

In this first article of the series, we start with someone close to home. Miti Vaidya – Miti Vaidya is an alumna of XLRI Jamshedpur (Class of 2011) and has also successfully completed Chartered Accountancy (May 2011). She joined TAS from campus and spent 5 years in various businesses and functions across India and Europe. Now, as part of the core team at InsideIIM – Konversations, she is focusing on new ways to expand offerings in education. She can be found curled up with a book after hours.

What was high school like for you? How did it contribute to your personality/ the person you are right now?

To this day, there are some school friends who refer to me as “Topper”, “Scholar” and such other academic insults. So, it shouldn’t be hard to infer that I was quite the geek in high school. Yes, it’s true that I did well in exams, but I definitely didn’t spend all my time studying (I can picture those same friends smirking). My interests, however, even at that time, weren’t really “cool”. I was obsessed with reading and easily got through the English literature textbook well in advance of the start of the academic year. I also inherited a lot of discipline and structure from my father, but was known for being unexpectedly devilish once in a while.

I guess all of this contributes strongly to the person I am right now. Pretty sure I’m still a geek (I sometimes spend my free time on Lynda or FutureLearn; it’s ok, go on, roll your eyes, I am not offended). Definitely still obsessed with reading. My love for neatness and structure is likely considered borderline OCD by those close to me.

On a serious note, I think all my habits and traits from high school have led me to be a very reliable friend and colleague, albeit a risk-averse one.

 

If money was no object, what would you do all day?

No-brainer question – travel and read, of course.

After a few weeks of this, I would probably get depressed without a productive goal to work towards, so I’d go and find myself a job. Education is my pet sector – I have tremendous faith in its power.

 

What advice would you give to a 5-year-younger you?

Travel more, flirt more and quit that finance job ASAP!

 

Many IIMs and other b-schools award extra points for being a woman. What is your take on that? Do you propagate the concept OR Have you faced any backlash for the same?

When I entered B-School, there were no such points formally awarded to women, so I haven’t faced any backlash. However, personally, I am in favour of this concept. In India, despite all efforts to promote women involvement, I think we are still woefully behind in terms of gender equality. It is important to have more women leaders or role models and one way to do this is by admitting more women into quality higher education. However, I don’t think this is the only solution or even a sustainable one. It only treats the symptoms of the gender equality problem to some extent. The real change can only come if there is a concerted effort to bring about a change in attitude in our homes and workplaces.

 

Name one incident that you encountered where someone told you, you couldn’t do something because you’re a woman.

The fondest memories of my time at Narsee Monjee College are of the B.Com college festival, Umang. Much of my personality shaping happened during my late teens as part of the leadership in this college festival. When I joined the organising committee, the festival had been running annually for a few years, but had never yet had a female Chairperson or a female Vice-Chairperson 3 (which oversaw Technical, Security and Finance departments). No one said out loud that a woman couldn’t hold these posts; it had just never happened. I loved working for Umang, and progressed very quickly in the organising team, with a good chance of becoming the first female Chairperson. I eventually lost by two votes to one of my closest friends, but made up by going on to become Vice-Chairperson 3 in his team. There was scepticism initially, whether a girl would be able to manage the rough external contractors who worked with the Technical department or be able to manage the physical pressures of the Security department. Today, I am proud to say that there have been enough women in this post after me, so whether a woman can do it is no longer a discussion point.

 

If you are out on a date, do you prefer to pay yourself? If you insisted that you want to pay for yourself, how did the other person react?

Quick Supporting Fact – I recently married the guy who I have been with off-and-on for over a decade, so I don’t really have too many “date” data points to rely on. Nevertheless, I am usually happy to split the bill equally; I think it’s the most hassle-free way. My boyfriend was usually happy with that too. Now that we are married, we don’t split each time. But we usually pay alternately and I think it has balanced over time. It definitely helps that neither of us think this is a big deal or something that needs discussion.

Our student team keeps the content on InsideIIM relevant. They also serve as great guides and mentors to the next crop of students about to enter business schools. The InsideIIM student team is a unique proposition where students get to run an online platform while they are studying. They learn the nuts and bolts of digital marketing, analytics and user behaviour in the online world. Students get immediate feedback about their work based on user behaviour on InsideIIM. Unlike most projects where one gives recommendations and goes away, on InsideIIM the student team is actually involved in the execution.
Tenure of the 3rd Student Team (2nd Year Students) : 15th March 2017 to 15th December 2017.

Note: We are inviting applications for the 3rd Student Team at InsideIIM for the year 2017-18 from students who will graduate in 2018. The last date to send in your applications is 9th March.

Who should apply?

– The person should be able to write. One of the toughest skills is to be able to articulate oneself in a structured manner. This automatically means that the person is also a good reader. We are open to hardworking and enthusiastic individuals too who may not be good at either but still contribute by virtue of sheer will power.

– Someone who is well-networked and has a high social media quotient. Are you an influencer?

– Never shies away from doing any level of work to get the desired outcome – Dignity of Labour. It does not mean you need to do anything illegal or immoral.

– Someone who has opinions about many things but uses facts, data and logic to form them.

– Extremely good communication skills.

– Loves data analysis and writing.

– He/She is proud of his/her background, university, business school etc.

In an endeavour to stay true to these pillars, every year, we invite current students at premier b-schools to be a part of InsideIIM Student Team. This enables the students to work on and contribute to a real life business whilst still studying at the b-school.
