MICAns Pitch Entrepreneurial Ideas to Venture Capitalists

Ahmedabad, January 29, 2015

MICA has been abuzz with excitement, as UK-based investor and Director at Cohezia, Mr. Chandresh Pala, Mr. Jiten Shende, CFO – Cohezia & Partner at a New York based investment fund and Mr. Siddharth Deshmukh, Strategy and Partnerships Director – Choezia, were on campus to judge viable business models developed by 2nd year students.

As a part of the Digital Communication Management (DCM) specialisation launched in 2013, the final year students of the Post Graduate Diploma in Management – Communications (PGDM-C) had to present a business project for a minimum viable product to the venture capitalists. The individual projects took approximately 7 months, consisting of planning and execution of their pilot projects and applying the resulting insights into their main business module. The candidates were graded on 7 parameters viz. the idea, market size, addressability & potential, scalability of operations, person/team & ability to execute, revenue model & funds utilisation, uniqueness & defend-ability of the idea and pitch presentation. Of the 14 students presenting their 11 viable business modules, 3 were shortlisted for funding. “It is very heartening to see how the DCM projects have evolved over the last 2 years. I strongly believe that they help you learn about yourself, your strengths and weaknesses owing to individual feedback & mentoring by the faculty apart from on-project insights. Students get the opportunity to work on ideas that they are passionate about” said Raghu Chaitanya, Asst. Professor & Area Chair- DCM.

The panelists adjudged Nikhil Saraf and Ankit Purohit as the candidates with the best pitch. Their idea, the ‘Stir’ app, is a no nonsense (no conversation) activity engine which recommends activities for its users according to their mood, past social behaviour and time at hand. Ankit recollected “Initially Nikhil and I were pursuing distinct ideas; I was targeting FOMO (fear of missing out) and Nikhil, boredom amongst youth. On Siddharth sir’s suggestion, we collaborated and the output that emerged was a lot better that what we had envisioned individually”. “Our app makes life simple for users. People end up wasting time using opening multiple tabs trying to find how to utilize their idle time. Stir is a go-to app that recommends tasks post understanding your preferences, history and current mood” adds Nikhil. Among other interesting ideas were initiatives such as an app to help people find others interested in playing football & setting up matches across cities, a LinkedIn for independent filmmakers, a service that provides information about offbeat locations and ‘storygifs’, a platform where people can create and share stories/narratives in a storyboard by compiling different Gifs logically with text.

Mr. Chandresh Pala observed, “Some really good ideas were presented. The themes presented are very different from last 2 years which focussed on marketing. The students are cognisant of interesting changes and what is happening out there in the market. But more thought needs to be put to refine these ideas and make them viable.” Throwing more light on the process of this three-term project Mr. Siddharth Deshmukh commented, “We encouraged a ‘fail-fast’ methodology- the more you fail, the quicker will be your learning from the same and application of the insight to your business module.” Mr. Jiten reinstated that ‘aiming low is a crime’ and advised students to harness a new skill or read up on areas that they didn’t have expertise in prior to joining the corporate world in the feedback session. Data collection and analytics, in his opinion, is a challenging task and is a pre-requisite for any good enterprise.

Experiential Learning At MICA – 6 Courses For The New Marketing Student

As the premier school for strategic management and communication, MICA always strives to stay relevant in terms of its curriculum. The subjects taught at MICA – right from Day 1, until the students step out into the corporate world – are tailored to help think beyond the obvious, reject pre-existing perceptions and build worldviews.

Semiotics

The course on Semiotics helps them understand that all aspects of their professional engagements – marketing, finance, retail, advertising, technology – need to be addressed as linkages within a larger discourse of social and cultural ideology. Professor Harmony Siganporia said, “I’ve said before, only half-facetiously, that semiotics is an extremely arrogant field of study: it thinks of itself as a master science, which seeks to locate how meaning enters (and circulates in) societies. For everyone from advertising agencies to MR organizations working on cultural research, semiotics is the buzz-word of the moment, but most practitioners don’t seem to understand just how vast its ambit actually is, with its links to futurology. As a method, semiotic analysis reverses conventional ideas about consumer insight mining entirely, and this makes it a powerful tool to have in any aspiring marketer’s arsenal.

In class, the endeavor is to try and ground my students in as rigorous a theoretical training as I think is necessary for them to become truly thinking – and cutting-edge – practitioners able to carry out work suffused with a semiotic sensibility.”

PGP-2 student, Madhur Agarwal, was all praises for the course, stating how the knowledge of semiotic theory helped her with her assigned project during her summer internship, as her work largely revolved around insight mining and understanding consumers.

Digital Marketing and Transformation Frameworks

Every marketer in the digital age will be expected to understand what is possible, achievable, affordable and effective within the digital channels. Internet marketing is evolving into a highly specialized discipline. It shares many of the core elements found in conventional direct marketing – media, messaging, planning, database management, CRM, segmentation and fulfillment with the added twist of new technologies, tools, and techniques that deliver extended capabilities and greater business opportunities.

Mica 3

First-year student, Abhishek Paul had this to say, “The landscape of digital media is changing every day but the core rules remain the same. The fascinating discussions we have in class cement our marketing sense while updating our knowledge base regularly. Our projects and assignments also give us a deeper understanding of how things actually work.”

Associate Dean and faculty for the course, Prof. Siddharth Deshmukh is excited for the endless possibilities digital marketing opens up to MICAns, “It’s not about being prepared for working and living in a digitally enabled world. It’s about shaping that world to suit your work and life. We are at a place where we have that choice- to shape or be shaped.”

Any Body Can Draw (ABCD)

In an ABCD class you will never hear the words proportion or line quality because at MICA we strive to learn the difference between seeing and looking. ABCD or Any Body Can Draw is a session that takes the learning out of the classroom, to the green surroundings of MICA. Ask Mr. Pravin Mishra, Head of CCC, and you’ll hear about the detrimental effects conventional art classes have on children who are just starting to learn how to express their creativity.

Mica 2

“Ask them to draw something they like, and 15/20 students will bring you the same generic scenery with triangular mountains and a winding river – and for that matter why should a mountain always be brown? Who decides?”, complains Mishra.

ABCD sessions take place 2-3 times a week depending on the students’ schedules. So far it has been a resounding success with even PGP students joining the CCC folk in their early morning sketching sessions.

Culture and Communication

This course attempts to disrupt the fixed understanding of culture and recast it as practices that emerge at the intersection of various socio-economic, political, and global landscapes.

Mica1

You explore ‘culture’ as text, one that communicates the ways it has been produced, who it is meant for and how it is used.

This is further built upon in the next term where you practice this awareness of culture as text. The second part of the course situates this awareness in a series of practical encounters with cultural stereotypes and develop an applied mental tool-kit for negotiating difference both at the workplace and in everyday life.

Stuti Sethi, a student of PGP-1, describing her learning experience with great enthusiasm, says,”The Culture and Communication classroom becomes a simulated site of cultural encounters to test and develop competencies for ‘reading culture’. We are introduced to ‘culture’ as a practice and process, especially in relation to identity. In the world of marketing, the course will help us apply these strategies in our encounters with difference.”

Urban Retail Studies

The retail environment has evolved rapidly in the past few decades, with the retailing industry and its placement and design of “brick-and-mortar” locations changing with evolving demographics, shopping behavior, transportation options and a desire in recent years for more unique shopping environments.

Mica 5

The course provides a basic understanding of the store format and how to categorize consumer behavior according to product/store categories- to eventually induce and maximize product purchase.

Mini Mathur, the professor offering this course is excited to see how students react to the subject this year, “We recently had the CEO of Walmart India drop by for a talk on campus, I thought it was really great exposure for students interested in this field. It’s the perfect groundwork for my course, really!”

Services Marketing

Offered in the second term, this course focuses on the difference between the marketing of goods and marketing of services (both B2B and B2C). The course is offered by Anita Basalingappa, who believes in teaching through case studies. Every class has a designated case study pre-read, usually from Harvard Business Review, which is discussed at length in class until a solution is reached.

Frameworks like the Service Gap Model, Zone of Tolerance and the Model of Diffusion of Innovation are only some of the many theoretical concepts we are taught to use when solving business problems within case studies.

“Coming up with an idea isn’t the be all and end all of a business. Services Marketing helps structure the execution of business ideas and service models, that wouldn’t otherwise be accessible to us” said Abhishek Agrawal, a PGP-1 student when asked about the relevance of the course.

MICA – A Reflection Of Our Nation’s Talent

Creativity is found in every corner of the country. And, across regions, future managers with a creative bent seem to find their way to MICA, a fact reflected in the diversity statistics released by the business school.

According to the numbers, each zone of the country is well-represented at the institute. But what’s more impressive than representation is the respect different cultures receive at MICA. Every festival, from Eid to Diwali to Onam, is celebrated enthusiastically by the MICAn community.

Aman, a student of PGP-1, says, “This is the first time I am away from home but the people of MICA have made this transition so easy. Everyone, straight from my batch-mates to the seniors to the faculty, is extremely friendly. While leaving Kolkata, I thought Durga Pooja was going to be very difficult to get past since I am so far away from my parents. But my MICAn family celebrated the festival with a passion that made me feel right at home!”

IMG_5002

MICA also boasts of a remarkable gender ratio: the female-to-male ratio of the current batch is 47:53, a number maintained by the B-school throughout years by virtue of their selection process. This is appreciated by recruiters across industries.

Mithila Bhaktha, a MICAn from Mumbai said, “We, in MICA, have in-depth discussions where the female perspective is presented, and this makes it possible to have discussions on feminist views on advertising. This helps in overall growth of thought and offers more diverse views to learn from. An even gender ratio also means that, from this talented bunch of individuals, you can always make a team of girls who play any sport.”

And when it comes to backgrounds, MICA has listened to industry demands and kept a healthy mix of students. Engineers make up 56% of the batch; with arts, commerce, science and other qualifications accounting for the rest.

IMG_4999

There is, of course, a driving philosophy behind MICA’s efforts. A diverse batch increases instances of valuable peer-to-peer learning and offers students a wholesome education, rather than the ‘cookie cutter’ formula run by B-schools today. This gives MICAns the grip on the culture that they are known for.

Shalaka Yadav, a MICAn who has completed her dentistry, says, “Learning takes place not only inside the classroom but outside as well. You come across a lot of new information and perspectives in a MICAn batch. For example, in group projects, given my background in dentistry, I come across fairly different approaches to the same problem. This helps pave the way to become a good manager.”

This diversity is a result of conscious efforts made across years by the senior management at MICA. And it also makes MICA a B-school with one of the best representation of the country’s talent.

MICA, India’s premier management school for Strategic Marketing and Communication, today announced the appointment of its alumnus Siddharth Deshmukh as the “Associate Dean – Industry & Alumni Partnerships, Associate Professor and Area Leader – “Digital Platform & Strategies”. Siddharth graduated as a “first MICAn” in 1996 (first batch of MICA’s two-year flagship PGDM) and returns back to his Alma Mater in a new capacity. He will join the institute from June 1, 2016.

Siddharth’s mandate is to connect and build the MICA brand with industry, alumni, students and other stakeholder partnerships. He will be the in-charge of Marketing, Alumni Relations, Placements and MDP functions at MICA. He will also lead MICA’s foray into the digitally enabled world – through the “Digital Platform and Strategies” Area.

Siddharth has been teaching at MICA for last three years in his capacity of an adjunct faculty. He co-created MICA’s Digital Communication Management (DCM) Specialisation along with other MICA faculty. He has mentored over 50 students over the past three years to convert their ideas into prototypes and potential ventures (this is a six month project for MICA’s second year PGDM students in lieu of dissertation). He also teaches foundation courses in Digital Transformational Frameworks and User Experience Design. Besides these, Siddharth has taught various other digital and non-digital courses across institutes.

Siddharth’s first two jobs were with Sony Entertainment Television and AT&T (before it became Idea Cellular). He has, since that time, been an entrepreneur and digital venture/product development evangelist for over a decade – with his earlier UK based company, Cohezia.  He remains on Cohezia’s Advisory Board and the various ventures it develops and grows.

Besides this, Siddharth has written two books – The Map that Matters (non-fiction) and The Gift of the Gab (management fiction). He writes two blogs – the business one is on LinkedIn and his personal musings are on smalljoysunlimited.blogspot.com. His interests lie in business innovation and disruptive thinking for positive results. He is an avid cricket enthusiast and loves movies, music and a good read.

Commenting on his new role at MICA, Siddharth said, “From being a student to being a professor – hello from the other side! Super excited about joining the one and only School of Ideas! Wish to see MICA lead India’s foray into new age education and an innovation driven economy.

Commenting on Siddharth’s appointment, Dr. Preeti Shroff, Dean – MICA, said, “MICA’s realigned vision and strategy is to create future leaders and professionals who are not just grounded in business management, strategic marketing, and communication, but also equipped to engage with the digitally enabled world. This would require a creative and innovative mindset towards solving complex problems using technology platforms and strategies. We are bringing thought and practice leaders in this area who will be catalysts in achieving the same. Siddharth is the first amongst many who will join the team of global educators at MICA. He has a proven track record of leading businesses and startup enterprises both globally and locally.
