What Is The Most Preferred Domain To Build A Career In – InsideIIM Recruitment Survey 2016 – Part 4

Do you know how many students are open to taking up entrepreneurship immediately on graduation in the graduating class of 2017? Which domain do you think is the most popular among aspirants and 1st years and how does that preference change once they are in the 2nd year?

It’s time to reveal our findings. This is year 5 of our Recruitment Survey and Recruiter Rankings.  The only platform that provides insight into what students and management professionals think. We look at their aspirations and motivations. We also come out with lists of the most desired recruiters across top business school campuses in India. These findings are based on surveying over 1200 students who answered over 25 questions in our questionnaire.

(View Part 1 – Cost of a MBA, Part 2 – Salary expectations, Part 3 – Job Satisfaction)

4a.1 aspirants

As is the case every year, before joining business school and in the first year of MBA a large proportion want to get into Consulting. The realisation dawns later that the odds are not very favourable if you are not in the top 7-8 schools in India and/or have poor acads or have a very ordinary overall profile. Consulting as a domain has seen robust hiring over the last 5 years but it is still not as easy to get a consulting job. Banking & Finance remains popular among this segment in part because of the money and partly because of the glamour attached to it. The numbers generally come crashing down for 2nd year students owing to realisation that there just aren’t enough top quality banking jobs in India or for Indian MBAs anymore and that foreign banks hire very selectively from the top tier of schools. Only 4% want to be entrepreneurs from this lot! This even before entering a school or spending a year in b-school. Is it that MBA now attracts only those who want to get a cushy job or was it always the case?

4a.2 2nd Years

Almost every single year we see Sales & Marketing overtaking other domains when we ask final year students. Summer Internships have been experienced. The reality around Banking & Finance is now known (look at the contrast when compared to Aspirants & First Year students 10% vs 20%) and a lot of people seem to switch in big numbers out of it.  Consulting is still very popular and desirable. HR sees a jump and the trend has been in that direction for some time and it continues to grow. More schools are also offering an HR specialisation – apart from the incumbents XLRI, TISS, SCMHRD we also have MDI-HR, IIM Ranchi – HR and other private schools supplying more HR professionals to the industry.

4b enterpreneurial ambitions

There is not much to analyse here. Number of graduating students willing to take up entrepreneurship continues to remain very low and we don’t see this changing unless there are some big changes made by business schools around fees, scholarships and placement policies. The MBA from an IIM today has become too expensive for students to become entrepreneurs immediately. Most private schools also have programmes which are very heavily priced. You can’t pay an EMI of 30k along with trying to start a company. It just doesn’t work.

Brand IIT And IIM Has Been Diluted – GD Monday

Welcome to yet another week of GD Monday!

To view and comment on previous weeks’ GD Mondays, please click here.

There is a specific kind of an awe that one experiences when you tell people you are from an IIT or an IIM and the tag IIT and IIM have been and will always be placed on a pedestal. But with the introduction of more such institutes every few years, the fear of the quality being affected stands. Can the newer and ‘baby’ IIMs ever be as good as the older IIMs? Will the quality of these institutes be affected? Is the brand IIT and IIM diluted? What is your take on it? Let us know in the comments section below!

This is how it will work:

1) Users can post their arguments in the comments section below by logging in through their www.insideiim.com User id.

2) You can argue and counter-argue on the topic for the entire week. You can even challenge your friends and make it more interesting!

3) The thread will be moderated by Team InsideIIM to ensure the discussion is kept relevant and is not abusive.

4) On Saturday, experts and industry professionals at InsideIIM (all ex-IIM, XLRI, MICA only) will rate each argument on the thread on the scale of 10 with some guidance.

This cannot replace the experience of the actual GD but this exercise will surely help you shape your line of thought. While we may not be able to help you here with your delivery, we ensure that if you go through these next few weeks with us on this thread you will markedly improve your content. Hopefully, there will be more substance when you actually speak in a GD after going through this exercise.

Scored Between 50 And 75%ile – Where To Apply? Should I Take CAT Next Year? – LIVE CHAT Transcript

ARKSS Srinivas, IIM Calcutta alumnus and CEO of Vistamind is here to help you figure out your strategy if you have scored between 50 and 75 percentile in CAT 2016. Should you take CAT again? Which schools are worth applying to? Should you quit CAT and MBA altogether. Ask him all this and much more!

Here are some excerpts from the live chat:

To view the whole chat, please click here.

Questionhello sir,
I have scored 80.XX%ile. what are some decent colleges in this percentile?

VistaMind – At 80%ile plus, there are colleges such as LIBA, IMI Kolkata (Check the last date), IMT Nagpur, FORE, BIM Trichy, NIRMA that you can apply to.

Question – Scored below 80%tile. How to go about for cat 17?

VistaMind – If you have decided to take up CAT 17, then I suggest that you contact Mr A Srinivas, an alumnus of IIM Indore and The ONLINE CAT Head of VistaMind. However, you may want to also check some colleges to apply to and go for interviews.

Question – Hi 50.xx PWD candidate. where to apply?

VistaMind – Please apply to NITIE, IIT Madras, Roorkee, Kanpur, BIM Trichy. You may get from some of the Ultra New IIMs.

Question – Hello sir, I scored 60 percentile, and am deliberate to pursue MBA from top notch college, but my main concern is that I am self-employed but my business is not registered. What should I do along with preparing for CAT -17?

VistaMind – Hi, If you want to continue your business, then it makes sense to Register that. If it is a small business and can be done as a side business, then I recommend that you take up a JOB. Writing CAT without a Job for too long will be a detriment for admission to TOP B Schools

Question –  Hi sir, I have a score of 77 percentile in CAT with 2 years of work experience. I’m a female belonging to general category. And my DILR score: 50 %ile
QA: 67 %ile
VA- 89%ile
NMAT score – 191
Class 10 – 81%
Class 12 – 85%
Graduation Engg. – 77%
What would you suggest me to go with? Is it only fair to give another attempt? Do I have a chance at TAPMI, Great Lakes and BIM?

VistaMind – I guess you will not get any of GLIM, BIM or TAPMI. At 77 percentile, IFMR Chennai could be the best you can get. Others such as BIMTECH, IMDR and others are available!. NM Bangalore is possible.
Go to NM Bangalore. But, suggest that you may seriously think of writing the CAT exam again!

Question – 56.77 percentile, NC-OBC.. suggest me a good private institute which can help me with education loan too.

VistaMind – Almost No Private College gives any reservation. Is there any other criteria that you have for a BSChool? What is realistically expected package at the end of two yearS? What are your academic scores. ?

Question – Hello sir I got 43 cat percentile. I  an NC-OBC guy. It’s really important I pursue my MBA this year so please any suggestions?

VistaMind – Hi, CAT percentile won’t be of much use. Please tell me as to which part of the country you want to pursue? What Fees levels you are looking at and what is your expected salary (realistically) at the end of TWO years. I can help you then!

Question – Hi..i graduated in 2015..cat-78,snap-91,nmat-202,xat-25-27..what should i do??..

VistaMind – Hi, You would get a few colleges – Under SNAP: SIBM Bangalore/SIIB ; Under XAT, probably GIM, LIBA (If you have applied). At 78 percentile in CAT, you may apply to NIRMA, BIMTECH, IMDR Pune. You will get NMIMS Bangalore too. Go ahead and go for the Interviews. You can decide to join or not at a later date.

Question – I have scored 67 percentile in CAT. I belong to SC Category. Which colleges am I eligible for?

VistaMind – At 67 percentile, you may apply to BIM Trichy, NITIE, NIT Trichy. You may get a few ultra New IIMs depending on your Academic Profile!

Question – sir, I scored 57.19% in cat-16, nc-obc category, any chances of FMS BHU call..?

VistaMind – Unlikely!

Question – Hello sir, I have scored 58.31 in CAT-2016. What should I do?

VistaMind – It depends on what you want to do this year. If you have to get into an Institute this year, then share your Academic Marks. There are many institutes which do not take CAT scores. Also, which part of the country that you want to pursue your MBA in? What should be the Fees range? Your expectations at the end of two years MBA? We can help you based on these!

Question – Hi
Cat 80.97
Snap 91.2
Nmat 198

Btech – 73
XII – 87
X – 86
Work ex 30 months IT
Should I apply for the colleges like SIIB, SIBM Banagalore, SIOM, NMIMS Bangalore

Or should attempt next yr?

VistaMind – Hi, You should apply. And try to get a final selection. You can always reject the same and write again (but defer this decision to April)

Apply to BIM Trichy, LIBA, NIRMA too

Question – Hello sir, I have scored 71.25 percentile in CAT, I did my Btech in 2015 I have no work exp, Should i go ahead with the score or prepare for CAT18?

VistaMind – At 71 percentile, you can get a few institutes like BIMTECH, IMDR Pune, IFMR Chennai, ITM, XIME etc. However, If you have decided to write CAT 17, then contact Mr A Srinivas, The ONLINE CAT head of VistaMind. He can be reached at a.srinivas@vistamind.com also.

VistaMind – The IIMABC calls are typically at 99.5+. Also, it depends on your Acads too. Work-ex will not be a problem, Suggest that you apply to NITIE, IITB, D, KGP and get a final selection (in New IIMs and probably other IIMs too). Then you can take a call if you want to write again!

Which Are The Most Preferred Banking & Finance Campus Recruiters? – InsideIIM Recruitment Survey 2016 – Part 8

Do the likes of Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank continue to dominate our banking rankings or are we in for a surprise? How do Indian banks and Indian financial services companies fare in the overall scheme of things?

In part 8 of the Recruitment Survey results we check which Banking and Finance recruiters are the most sought after among 3 respondent categories : 1) Aspirants & 1st Year MBA Students on Campus 2) The 2nd Year or Graduating Students 3) Alumni

(View Part 1 – Cost of a MBA, Part 2 – Salary expectations, Part 3 – Job Satisfaction, View Part 4 – Most Preferred Career Domain, View Part 5 – How can campus recruiters improve hiring, View Part 6 – Summer Internship Insights, View Part 7 – General Management Recruiter Ranks)

We start with ranks as per the responses of the graduating Class of 2017.

10.2 BSFI 2nd year

Goldman Sachs is back at the top and edges J.P.Morgan by a third decimal point. Deutsche Bank has really suffered as compared to its position last year. Has it got anything to do with the latest news in the media in Germany about the bank? World Bank as a preferred employer has really shot up in the rankings this year.

BNP Paribas in the top 10 is an interesting new addition in place of Nomura.  The rest of the top 10 remains the same.

BSFI 02

None of the Indian banks feature in the top 10 primarily because of compensation. However if one were to look at rankings within the Indian BFSI space, we see a drop in the Edelweiss employer brand. Yes Bank is a big gainer as it wasn’t even in the top 5 last year and it tops this year’s rankings. Avendus remains strong as ever. Kotak re-enters the top 5 space.

Alumni

What alumni feel is important in a rapidly changing financial space. It serves as a direction to people wanting to enter this space.

10.3 BSFI post MBA

We see the fall of Deutsche Bank again. All names remain the same in the top 10 with musical chairs being played when it comes to ranks!

BSFI 03

This is where it gets interesting. PayTM is the hot employer suddenly this year among B-School alums! ICICI loses its sheen and so does Axis. Negative PR around NPA issues weighing here?

1st Year MBA Students and Aspirants

The category with the least exposure. The ranking is almost entirely based on perception. Most of the respondents wouldn’t even know all the activities a bank does. They will definitely struggle to explain what an investment bank actually does.

10.1 BSFI aspirants

Do the likes of Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank continue to dominate our banking rankings or are we in for a surprise? How do Indian banks and Indian financial services companies fare in the overall scheme of things?

In part 8 of the Recruitment Survey results we check which Banking and Finance recruiters are the most sought after among 3 respondent categories : 1) Aspirants & 1st Year MBA Students on Campus 2) The 2nd Year or Graduating Students 3) Alumni
