What Is The Most Preferred Domain To Build A Career In – InsideIIM Recruitment Survey 2016 – Part 4

Do you know how many students are open to taking up entrepreneurship immediately on graduation in the graduating class of 2017? Which domain do you think is the most popular among aspirants and 1st years and how does that preference change once they are in the 2nd year?

It’s time to reveal our findings. This is year 5 of our Recruitment Survey and Recruiter Rankings.  The only platform that provides insight into what students and management professionals think. We look at their aspirations and motivations. We also come out with lists of the most desired recruiters across top business school campuses in India. These findings are based on surveying over 1200 students who answered over 25 questions in our questionnaire.

(View Part 1 – Cost of a MBA, Part 2 – Salary expectations, Part 3 – Job Satisfaction)

4a.1 aspirants

As is the case every year, before joining business school and in the first year of MBA a large proportion want to get into Consulting. The realisation dawns later that the odds are not very favourable if you are not in the top 7-8 schools in India and/or have poor acads or have a very ordinary overall profile. Consulting as a domain has seen robust hiring over the last 5 years but it is still not as easy to get a consulting job. Banking & Finance remains popular among this segment in part because of the money and partly because of the glamour attached to it. The numbers generally come crashing down for 2nd year students owing to realisation that there just aren’t enough top quality banking jobs in India or for Indian MBAs anymore and that foreign banks hire very selectively from the top tier of schools. Only 4% want to be entrepreneurs from this lot! This even before entering a school or spending a year in b-school. Is it that MBA now attracts only those who want to get a cushy job or was it always the case?

4a.2 2nd Years

Almost every single year we see Sales & Marketing overtaking other domains when we ask final year students. Summer Internships have been experienced. The reality around Banking & Finance is now known (look at the contrast when compared to Aspirants & First Year students 10% vs 20%) and a lot of people seem to switch in big numbers out of it.  Consulting is still very popular and desirable. HR sees a jump and the trend has been in that direction for some time and it continues to grow. More schools are also offering an HR specialisation – apart from the incumbents XLRI, TISS, SCMHRD we also have MDI-HR, IIM Ranchi – HR and other private schools supplying more HR professionals to the industry.

4b enterpreneurial ambitions

There is not much to analyse here. Number of graduating students willing to take up entrepreneurship continues to remain very low and we don’t see this changing unless there are some big changes made by business schools around fees, scholarships and placement policies. The MBA from an IIM today has become too expensive for students to become entrepreneurs immediately. Most private schools also have programmes which are very heavily priced. You can’t pay an EMI of 30k along with trying to start a company. It just doesn’t work.

“Today’s Popular TV Serials Depict A Life Different From Normal Life. Why Do You Think Realism Is Absent From Them?” – WAT Wednesdays

Welcome to yet another week of WAT Wednesdays!

To view and comment on previous weeks’ topics, please click here.

This week’s topic is an actual WAT topic of IIM Indore 2013 – “Today’s Popular TV Serials Depict A Life Different From Normal Life. Why Do You Think Realism Is Absent From Them?”

Please bear in mind that there is no right or wrong answer for it. That’s an opinion. However, the reasons for that opinion may be right or wrong.  And that’s what is important – the process of reaching the conclusion rather than the conclusion itself.

Write an essay on it and let us help you get better at it.

This is how it will work:

1) Users can post their essays in the comments section below by logging in through their www.insideiim.com User id.

2) You can write your essay on the topic for the entire week. You can even challenge your friends and make it more interesting!

3) The thread will be moderated by Team InsideIIM to ensure the discussion is kept relevant and is not abusive.

4) On Saturday, experts and industry professionals at InsideIIM (all ex-IIM, XLRI, MICA only) will rate each essay on the thread on the scale of 10 with some guidance.

This exercise may not replace the practice that you may need daily to master WAT but it will definitely help you to shape your line of thought. We will ensure that if you go through these next few weeks with us on this thread you will markedly improve your content. Hopefully, there will be more substance when you actually write an essay/WAT after going through this exercise.

IIM Ahmedabad Final Placements 2016 – 2017 Live

IIM Ahmedabad commenced their Final Placement Process on February 13th, 2017 for the class of 2017. IIM A follows a cluster cohort placement process wherein companies offering similar profiles are grouped into cohorts, and several cohorts are invited to the campus in a particular cluster. The schedule for placements this year is as follows:

Cluster 1: 13th February 2017

Cluster 2: 16th February 2017

Cluster 3: 19th February 2017

The institute will follow a rolling process post-Cluster 3 if necessary.

Look out for this section with more updates on the above mentioned dates.

16th February 2017

IIM Ahmedabad conducted Cluster 2 of the Finals placement process for the PGP batch of 2017 on 16th February 2017. The second cluster consisted of five cohorts: Consumer Goods and Services, General Management, Niche Consulting, Pharmaceuticals and Technology.

The Consumer Goods and Services and Technology cohorts included regular partners like Airtel, Asian Paints, HUL, ITC, Nestlé, P&G, Reckitt Benckiser and Samsung. The General Management and Leadership cohort comprised of recruiters such as the C K Birla Group, Mahindra and Tata Administrative Services, while the Niche Consulting cohort comprised of firms like Feedback Infra and others.

The third cluster is scheduled to be conducted on 19th February 2017.

13th February 2017

The first cluster of the Final Placement process for the PGP class of 2017 was held today at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. The firms that participated in Cluster 1 comprised three cohorts – investment banking and markets; management consulting and private equity, venture capital and hedge funds.

The list of Cluster 1 recruiters included regular partners such as Accenture Strategy, A. T. Kearney, Bain & Co., Credit Suisse, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, McKinsey & Company, Oliver Wyman and others.

IIM-A has always had an extremely rich mix of firms from diverse sectors. Consulting firms, offering management consulting roles across geographies, continued to hire in large numbers. This reinforces the strength of the general management program at IIM-A. McKinsey & Company made the highest number of offers – 15 (including pre-placement offers) in Cluster 1. Finance firms offered roles in investment banking, private equity, venture capital and capital markets across functions and geographies.

The second cluster will be held on 16th February 2017

Valentine’s Day Is A Marketing Gimmick – GD Monday

Welcome to yet another week of GD Monday!

To View and Comment on previous weeks’ topics, please click here.

On one hand, it seems sweet to have a day dedicated to lovers all around the world, on the other hand, it seems stupid to wait for an entire year to make someone feel special. With a hike in prices for flowers, gifts and movies on Valentine’s day and an added pressure to have a date to make yourself seem cool, Valentine’s Day may have just become another marketing gimmick. Would you rather make your someone special feel loved on just one day by bringing them flowers or just do it on any other day just because? Would you want to be a part of the marketing gimmick or be free of that?

Tell us your views on the comments below and get evaluated for the same. Please bear in mind that there is no right or wrong answer for it. That’s an opinion. However, the reasons for that opinion may be right or wrong.  And that’s what is important – the process of reaching the conclusion rather than the conclusion itself.

This is how it’ll work:

1) Users can post their arguments in the comments section below by logging in through their www.insideiim.com User id.

2) You can argue and counter-argue on the topic for the entire week. You can even challenge your friends and make it more interesting!

3) The thread will be moderated by Team InsideIIM to ensure the discussion is kept relevant and is not abusive.

4) On Saturday, experts and industry professionals at InsideIIM (all ex-IIM, XLRI, MICA only) will rate each argument on the thread on the scale of 10 with some guidance.

This cannot replace the experience of the actual GD but this exercise will surely help you shape your line of thought. While we may not be able to help you here with your delivery, we ensure that if you go through these next few weeks with us on this thread you will markedly improve your content. Hopefully, there will be more substance when you actually speak in a GD after going through this exercise.
