Talk Summary:
Unitus Seed Fund is investing up to 150 crore in early stage impact businesses — also known as Bottom of the Pyramid (BoP) Startups — in India over the next three years. Unitus has 13 companies in its portfolio now. Unitus Seed Fund’s Managing Partner Will Poole will talk about impact investing trends and issues with a focus on what they could do to improve the ecosystem in India. Using case studies, he will illustrate what gets an impact investor excited about a business, and what turns them off. He will also talk about promising areas of opportunity to serve the BoP that he is seeing for impact in India, ranging from healthcare to education to livelihood enhancement.
Speaker Bio:
Will Poole is a Social Technologist and venture investor, focused on improving ecosystems that bring social and economic opportunity to low-income populations. Will serves as Chairman of NComputing, a leader in low-cost, low-energy computing and co-founded Bangalore-based Pengala Learning and Vidyanext, whose mission is to change the way India learns.
He founded Social Venture Partners Seattle's initiatives around social entrepreneurship including SVP Fast Pitch, serves on the investment committee of the W-Fund, co-founded SVP Bangalore. Will was previously a corporate Vice President at Microsoft .His career started by founding two startups at the dawn of the PC era, working in the early days at Sun Microsystems, and pioneering e-commerce at eShop which was acquired by Microsoft in 1996. Will is passionate about education from early learning to higher ed, where he advises Western Governors University and Brown University on technology and is a Trustee of Bainbridge Graduate Institute. Will received a degree in Computer Science from Brown University.
