PART - A
The Birla group was started in the year 1857 by Seth Shiv Narayan Birla. It was under the guidance of Mr Aditya Vikram Birla that the company was put on the world map as one the leading business empires in 1969. It has a rich heritage of 162 years and has still stuck on to its original vision, mission and values, this is the main reason behind its success. It is the one of largest Indian conglomerate in the private sector.
ABG has subsidiaries in all sectors of business be it construction or fashion. The first introduction of ABG in my life was during my childhood when my mother used to take me shopping to pantaloons as it was the leading multi brand retail store in Bangalore, there was no product that you couldn’t find under their roof. Their subsidiary Idea Cellular Limited revolutionized the telecom industry by proving the cheapest calling, messaging and internet rates and made networking easy and affordable for students like me in the 2009-2011 period. It is also thanks to ABG that I have had the opportunity to wear premium formal Clothing from brands like Louis Philippe and Van Heusen. Their brand “People” started a few years back has caught the attention of the youth due their impressive styling and affordable pricing. People has been my go-to store for casual wear. Aditya Birla Capital is a leading financial service provider and I have availed their insurance service for my two-wheeler.
But the most important effect Aditya Birla group has is that it inspires the upcoming managers in the country to dream big and not settle for anything less than the best. If given an opportunity, I would be honored to be a part of the Aditya Birla Group and learn under the guidance from the actual masters of business.
PART - B
Right after completion of my degree as an engineer I chose to join my father in his business that primarily focuses on utility piping contracts. Having been born and brought up in a business family, I did recognize the struggles involved in running it; even on a small scale. The idea of involving me into family run business was unplanned and sudden. Following an unfortunate demise of my father’s business partner it was time for me to step in and strengthen him. It was not just a professional set back, but an emotional one was well. The journey was difficult and intimidating. It was required for me to learn the basics of business like a regular employee and it was daunting. The work assigned to me demanded a lot of learning from the scratch and hard work late into the night. Regular site visits were predominant as I believed observing real time workflow was more valuable than a desk job. It was during this period that I was trusted with successfully managing the project for GE, India (Whitefield, Bangalore). It included fabrication and erection of support structure for flow loop. I have also successfully handled the completion of Utility piping contract at Glaxo Smith Kline Oral drug Plant at Vemagal, Karnataka. This included steam and condensate piping along with RO water and manufacturing of HSD storage and its distribution system. Over the course of 4 years I have learnt invaluable lessons from my father on a professional front. It involved tender generation, basics of tender bidding, generating RFQs and preparation of comparison sheets, interpersonal communication with vendors and clients, managing projects and project deliverables and more importantly core business ethics.
