On 15th January 2015, Vinod Gupta School of Management, IIT Kharagpur had the privilege of hosting a guest lecture by Mr. Subhabrata Bapi Sen, President, Sen Analytics. Bapi Sen is the President of Sen Analytics and Adjunct Professor of Computer Science/Math/Physics at FDU, NJ, Agent in Insurance Industry (Aflac) and an active Communicator/Leadership Trainer as Club Sponsor for the Toastmaster International. He holds a Ph.D. from U.C., Berkeley in Operations Research with minor in Statistics and Control Theory. He received his Bachelor of Technology degree from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and was nominated as a Senior Member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE). Mr. Sen holds nine patents related to Wireless Technology. He worked in Research and Development for 35 years as a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at AT&T-Bell Laboratories and then spent 7 years as a consultant to Defense Department through DSCI/Westgate with Security Clearance.   Mr Sen enlightened the students of the pitfalls of the Artificial intelligence and decision analysis system. He explained that there are many problems which cannot be solved by the Artificial intelligence or decision analysis systems. These systems can be used only to do the tasks that are repetitive as these systems can’t unlearn and relearn according to the situations. Expertise is a subtle phenomenon that rarely can be replicated in the pre-programed rules. He explained the importance of human instincts by stating a quote “The heart has its reason that reason does not know”. He also mentioned that there is no system that can replicate or reproduce the capabilities of human intelligence or instincts. He explained the 5 stages of skill acquisition namely- 1.Novice 2.Advanced Beginner 3.competent 4.Proficient 5.Expert and he said that expertise do not work on rules but works holistically. This is the area in which the artificial intelligent systems fail. All in all, the session turned out to be a very enriching and informative one for the students who are techno managers of future. This session was the much needed check on the new technological trends and their pitfalls.
