I still vividly remember the conversation I had with my school principal as a 6-year-old about how we make a building. I saw so many buildings come up in the city and was curious as to how could they stand erect and not fall. My principle replied with the name, “Ultratech Cement”. That was my 1st introduction to Aditya Birla Group. At that age, I couldn’t comprehend what cement does, but I saw Ultratech cement as the reason for all the buildings that I saw on my way from school to home. Later when we were building our own home, my father said he only trusted Ultratech cement for it.
Idea cellular became my 1st phone no. Their advertisement resonated with every single individual with positive taglines, “An Idea can change your life” and “What an Idea, Sir Ji”. The wide variety of recharges, good customer service and the excellent network wooed me to never look for other telecom companies. When I joined Tata Motors, my corporate sim was also surprisingly Idea.
I remember this incident where I had to purchase shirts for all Tata Motors employees in Delhi after consulting on brand with my boss. I was not particularly sure of what brand to look for but my boss was adamant on Louis Philippe. Out of curiosity, I decided to go to Louis Philippe store nearby and see what makes them so special. I went to the shop in Cannaught Place, Delhi. I was surprised to see the customer service and the knowledge of the personnel on clothing. The person helped me chose the shirt color and the quality of cloth. I placed the order then and there and to my happiness, none of the 250 employees who got the shirt had any complaint about the choice, I made (Thanks to the CP store guy :P).
Challenges Overcome to achieve my Ambitions
I come from a very poor family. My father is a tutor and he goes around the city riding on his bicycle, giving tuition classes to high school students. During my schooling days, my family earning was around Rs. 3000/month out of which Rs. 1500 used to go in me and my sister school fees. It was the time when Rs. 5 seemed more than Rs. 1000 for us.
After passing my 10th, I got admission into Adwaita Mission, Banka but we didn’t have the finance to pay the fees. To support my father, I started taking tuition classes for class 9th students. I was good at Maths and in a short period, I became the youngest popular teacher in my city.
The earning was increasing with every passing month but it started becoming tough to simultaneously manage preparation for IIT JEE and work. I had to stop giving tuition 3 months before the board exam to focus on my studies. Fortunately, I topped my district in class 12th with a score of 95.4% and many renowned personalities of my city came forward to finance my engineering. That result gave me huge confidence to trust my abilities and the support helped me to see the dream of being an engineer becoming a reality. I cracked AIEEE and joined NIT Patna, I asked my father to go for a loan because I had the confidence that I will be able to pay it back. Later, I got placed in Tata Motors, one of the top companies that came to our campus for Mechanical Engineering. I never looked back since.
I accomplished the best rating in my job for two consecutive years & saw my salary grow from 5.6 to 8.75 lakhs. The experience enriched me in terms of personality and showed me the skill that I got of managing clients and staff. I left the job to join NITIE to learn important skills in management. Though the fees are over 14 lakhs, money is least of the problem now.
