“Risk Management? What risk am I going to manage? What is Risk? Is it even quantifiable? How do they measure risk? “, all these questions rushed into my mind all of a sudden. However, the HR was generous enough to ask if we were satisfied with the allotted department. There, I thought of breaking my comfort level. Although I was interested in Marketing and Operations, I decided to give it a shot.
Within the Risk Management department, I was to work with the ERM (Enterprise Risk Management) team. In the initial days, I was asked to learn the basics of Insurance, Risk Management, and other related topics. Subsequently, I started gaining Interest in the subject. I believe, apart from my efforts to seek knowledge of the field, the most important part here was the support and help that I received from my team.
My mentor, Mr. Shibyanshu Sharma, is the AVP of Risk Management department. Despite his too busy schedule, he never ever turned down my questions to clarify my doubts. No matter how silly or serious it might be. Every day, post the working hours, he used to review what I have learnt and then provide his expertise. I remember him once saying, “ Busy people always find the time, Lazy people don’t”, in an instance where I was running behind the schedule. These words etched deep into my heart and made a place for a lifetime.
My Project titled, “Enterprise Risk Management in a billion dollar company”, essentially covered
• Conceptualization and Implementation of system based Risk Register for Branch offices of SBI Life Insurance Co. Ltd
• Identifying emerging risks like Brand Risk
• Study on Opportunity Risk Register and End to End Risk Cycle, and
• Managing facilitated Risk Workshop
Do I seem to be contradictory? Initially, I had said that I am an amateur in the field and then by the end of merely 2 months, how can I deliver so much? This is because of the great learning environment which SBIL provided me. Bi-monthly reviews, mid-review and the final presentation were a part of my two months journey. Even I was given the opportunity to present my project to our Executive Vice-President. My project was not only accepted but implemented also. This shows how seriously SBIL takes its Interns.
I shall always remain indebted to SBI Life for giving me such a rich first-time experience of the corporate world.
