Does having a letter of recommendation from previous employer or undergraduate help during the admissions and placements in a b-school?
If a candidate has a letter of recommendation from a previous employer (Team Lead or reporting manager) or from a professor (from the undergraduate days), then will that be helpful during the admission process or further during the placements in a b-school?
How useful are recommendations in a b-school?
Generally for admission the IIMs don’t require a recommendation letter from their bosses or professors. The recommendation is as powerful as the person giving it, so if that hilights some of your academic excellence or extracurricular responsibility its good. For placements this can help, for eg. if you have headed a project which saved a lot of money for the company then the same written by your employer is very beneficial. In case of recommendation from professors if it says something like ‘academically excellent with 1st position in college’ then it can be very beneficial.
Recommendation letters are less useful in campus placements when compared to off campus placements. Generally, you have a fixed format of CV which is sent tio all recruiters for shortlisting purpose. You might not be able to produce the recommendation in the complete process itself.
Off Campus placement is a completely different story. There a recommendatin letter, especially from a professional on a high position, will help you a lot. Always attach such letters when applying for off-campus placements.
One last poin which I would like to state is that even more than a letter, linkedIn recommendations and testimonials help. Many people, and potential recruiters, look at your profile online.. Having a recommendation there will help you a lot.
