Is NMIMS worth joining?

Is NMIMS worth joining, considering 18.5L fee which does not include accommodation and mess charges, provided someone have to take loan for the same?

I don’t think so.
Here is why:

  1. The batch strength is huge, fees are also comparable to that of IIMs (placements aren’t), rankings are constantly dropping every year.
  2. There is no campus to speak of, although Mumbai’s space-crunch doesn’t allow any institutes to have a big campus. So, understandable.
  3. The exam is too easy. CAT aspirants consider NMAT as a warm-up for CAT. I prepare for half a month and managed to score 204 and 207 in two of the three attempts. There is no negative marking, so no one knows how many students with flukes manage to clear the cut-off (By the way, most of the NMAT answers for a Window are known because of Google Docs being passed around. So that’s there). This raises some doubts about the quality of peers at SBM. Maybe undeserving candidates get in.
  4. NMIMS has unfortunately created an image of being a purely profit-oriented B-School; an image it is not being able to shake off. Three attempts of NMAT cost 12,000. Fees is a lot. There is a fee for giving them an interview as well. I mean, it just feels like being looted even before we get admission into the institute.

Having said that, placements are not too bad. Amol mentions being in the top 10%, which means top 10% of a batch of 600 or 700. That’s some task to be fair.
Location is definitely an advantage for NM.

NMIMS is definitely worth joining. It is one of the better colleges and if you are in the top 10% of your batch, you will get a very good placement too. Rather than wasting a year, it is worth joining NMIMS. Also, it is in Mumbai which yields numerous advantages through interactions with various industry professionals. However, if you are very adamant about IIM ABC and believe that you can crack them soon, then it is worth the risk

I had been admitted to NMIMS Mumbai and had taken admission as my backup plan.

Depends upon what are your options. If you think very short term then you would have to pay very high EMIs initially. Long term perspective: Stronger brand, good firms visiting. It is one of the good b-schools in India
