Wednesday WAT/GD Topic- The Supreme Court fears that a Cambridge Analytica style situation can arise in India with UIDAI influencing the upcoming elections. What are your views?

The SC has expressed fear that the UIDAI might be unable to stop the data from being leaked or may assist in leaking it for the upcoming elections in 2019.
However, UIDAI claims that it lacked the tools and the learning algorithms that Facebook and Google have to tamper with poll results.

The UIDAI data was available for 500 rupees. This is a confirmed fact, however much UIDAI denies it. Such a breach can definitely occur again, and our data will be given out to political parties (as was in the case of CA and Facebook) to be used for their ulterior motives.

Yes, it doesn’t matter if UIDAI claims that a similar scenario (CA-Facebook scandal) might be a possibility or not, it’s time we learn from others’ mistakes and not wait to commit our own. Facebook has introduced a fact-checking program (BOOM, an independent digital journalism initiative certified through the International Fact-Checking Network) in India to combat the spread of false news which can be a major nuisance in the upcoming polls. The program is set to start in Karnataka as a pilot program. UIDAI, being the national body, should implement similar strategies and not just rely on outside organisations.
