What if i cant get into any committee at a B-School?

In any B-School, the number of positions for Committees are quite limited, and despite trying your level best, it is quite possible for you to not get into any committee. You may choose to feel disheartened by the fact that you lost a CV point, a great experience and the chance to network easier But, on the up side you will have something else- Time. You can do the following with it:

  1. There are Clubs of all kinds that exist on campus, both academic and non-academic. You could try to get selected into those and if you are a little sharp, it could almost be equal to the CV point of a committee. Because it is the experience that you have that will matter at the end of the day. I cannot stress more on how important your initiative and interest levels are. No club is too frivolous, do not let snide comments get in the way of giving your best for something you are passionate about.
  2. Speaking of passion, you could test the entrepreneurial waters. No idea is too small, you would be surprised with the simple start of some great ventures, plus you could get help from your professors and even find a partner in your B-School.
  3. An approach I have seen some of my own batch mates do, is forming a new club. It is a genius of an idea, requires a dedicated team, and patience to make it go from being something on paper to something official, with your team being called the Founding Members. It’s always a good idea to have the objective of the Club clear and something the Batch agrees with. It will initially start off as a Special Interest Group, but when it seasons, you could get to design its logo and its motto.
  4. Or, if you want something more practical in the time frame you have, you could look around to find some great things that happen in other B-Schools, but no definitive effort or manpower has been expended in your B-School. You could, make a short term student body for that particular event, activity or cause and dissolve it when it is completed. Of course there are formalities, but it would be simpler than the above, provided the source of funding and the hierarchy are clear.
