Moving towards the supply side of the industry, Mr Dasgupta explained in detail the tools and techniques that are being currently used in this field to streamline the flow of work, standardise it, accurately document the clients’ requirements and achieve overall efficiency in the fold of operations. He also talked about the ‘LEAN’ method which is used for efficient resource utilisation and production in this context. Next, he introduced the novel concept of Unified Project Management, Capgemini’s proprietary technique of project management geared to produce optimum results within minimum possible time, and cost. Mr Dasgupta also spoke to the students the reason behind offshoring and the advantages related to it. The needs of establishing customer intimacy and delivering exactly what was promised were also discussed in the session.
The guest ended the lecture by explaining the advantages of Industrialisation and how it has benefited countless organisations over the course of history. From business blueprinting and designing to system integration and data migration, all of these critical and error-prone processes have improved significantly due to industrialisation, thereby increasing the productivity and efficiency of the employees manifolds. Thus, it was a very interesting session where Mr Dasgupta bridged the gap between academic learning and corporate experience by sharing real-life examples from his own projects to explain the industry relevance of several theoretical concepts. At the end of the lecture, he also answered a number of questions which the budding managers of the institute put forth regarding globalisation, decreasing the industry’s reliance on Europe and the USA.
Hence, without a hint of doubt, the session could be billed as a really enriching one where the students found an opportunity to dive deep into the IT Consulting domain and learn a valuable lot about its essential underpinnings. The takeaways from this session will indeed be helpful for the students in the times ahead and are sure to equip them with a much greater degree of corporate readiness as they prepare to face the challenges of the future as managers. On this note, the Vinod Gupta School of Management, IIT Kharagpur once again extends its heartfelt gratitude towards Mr Goutam Dasgupta and looks forward to maintaining strong ties with the esteemed guest in the future.
