IIM Shillong – An Abode In Clouds
Indian Institute of Management, Shillong also called – The Campus in clouds- is my home for the next two years. I’ve been here for about 20 days now and I’ve already started admiring the culture here. There are several things about the institute that make it out-stand all others and one of them is “The foundation course on sustainability.”
The course offers understanding of various sustainability issues around the world and the ways they can be addressed. Be it optimum utilization of resources, moving towards alternatives, green practices or anything that one may think of, the course covers everything. Interestingly, the facilitators allow the batch to learn amongst themselves.
For all of the seven days, I remember we were involved in different activities wherein we used to figure out the simplest of issues, discuss them amongst the teammates and bring out some solutions. The problem could be as simple as exploitation of non-renewable resources, waste generations to the larger ones involving corporate cases.
After these sessions, came the final day, the legacy trek of IIM Shillong. I’ve been reading articles about this before joining and was very excited for the same. Northeast is famous for its beauty-the astonishing mountains, waterfalls and the greenery. Everybody was up by 5:00 in the morning; buses were there to receive us.
Our first destination was the sacred forests of Mawphlang in the East Khasi hills. The untouched elegance of nature conserving the biological diversity with no human intervention is not common these days. Absolute silence away from the chaotic life, I realized how us humans have deteriorated the environment and the green lands.
The second was the trek, we started walking towards the side of a clean flowing river moving with us. The slopes came and we were into deep rain forests. The roads were tough but so is our family, and the bond got stronger with this journey. Moving along with the breathtaking views and lush green forests we finally were at the top. The neighbouring mountains seemed on the same level, clouds were pretty close and the climate to be cherished. With slight rain showers admiring us, we could see the majestic waterfalls around, some far come close. Finally, after walking for long hours we were all hungry. We reached the destination where we had our lunch.
For me this has been one of the best moments of my life, I came to know my batch mates, experienced the beauty of North East and yes, collected memories for a lifetime.
