IIM Shillong – What Does My Campus Offer Me?
As a B.Tech (Metallurgical Engineering) from IIT-BHU, Varanasi, and M.Tech (Materials & Metallurgical engineering) from CSIR-NML, Jamshedpur I have gained in-depth knowledge in the field of materials science, metallurgical engineering and related industries. Working in SAIL, a Maharatna company, as an in house consultant to five integrated steel plants, I have got immense opportunities to observe and comprehend the functioning of a large scale manufacturing business closely. I have come to understand how different processes have to be seamlessly integrated while maintaining more than 99% uptime in order to achieve the desired output. It is now evident to me how effective management is the key to success of any business.
In the coming two years I desired to attain a formal business education and gain insights into understanding customer behavior, predicting future consumer demands, working out cash flow, managing sales, logistics and other aspects that would enable me to contribute in a more holistic manner. IIMs are the first thing that comes to mind when it comes to quality management/ business schools in India. The standard that IIMs have set is unparalleled. I have been following the achievements of business schools for quite some time and I am amazed by the progress that IIM Shillong has made since its inception in 2008. I believe the growth profile of alumni of any business school is the best parameter to judge the performance of that institution. Despite having a small batch size of 182, IIM Shillong consistently features in the winning team in several corporate competitions. Be it “The Aditya Birla Group Scholarships”, “Yes Bank Transformation Series”, “Tata Steel-a-Thon”, “Mahindra War Room”, “Aviva The Next Big Idea” or “The ICICI Stockminds”, IIM Shillong is the name that prominently appears in the winning teams. The way students of IIM Shillong excel at corporate platforms and internships is something that sets apart this institute from the rest. I want to be a part of this milieu which would help me to expand my knowledge base, hone my managerial skills and gain insights into the business domain. This business knowledge coupled with my existing technical skill set would help me in comprehending different aspects of a manufacturing industry.

My tenure with SAIL coincided with a 70,000 Crores modernization and expansion plan of SAIL during which I had an enormous opportunity to learn and gain insights into the implementation of large-scale projects. Looking forward, I would like to work with Hindalco industries (one of the biggest producers of primary aluminum (1.3 Mtpa) in Asia). My technical knowledge in the field of extractive metallurgy, my experience of implementing large-scale projects coupled with business acumen will help me in comprehending the holistic picture of any situation/ challenge lying ahead in a manufacturing industry. I believe I would be able to contribute in a holistic manner towards the progress of Hindalco industries.
