When I joined IIM Shillong a year ago, an introductory module was going on, during which we were asked to introduce ourselves. One of the questions which were asked was ‘why you joined IIM Shillong?’. The things that struck me the most was how most of us had a similar answer to this question. This answer was ‘because of placements’.
During the initial days, I found it difficult to live in Shillong. This was largely because how different Shillong is from everywhere else and also, life at IIM Shillong is completely different. One year down the line, I consider it to be my second home and feel nostalgic when away from it. There has been a drastic change in how I feel about this place and how I have grown over this past year. When I look back, I feel bad thinking about our answer to the question of why we chose this amazing institute, because there have been so much more than just placements.
This change has primarily been because of two reasons. One, the people, and second, how this place truly is. I have had countless opportunities to learn from a diverse group of people. This experience has been indispensable to my learning experience. Since the initial period, a habit of professionalism was inculcated in us, and this reflected during the summer internships. The seriousness and professionalism shown by the students of IIM Shillong is second to none and hence, we were able to grab numerous ‘best intern’ or ‘outstanding work’ awards at organisations we were interning at. Also, the faculty has been supportive and informative and has guided us at every step of our journey.
Now, talking about the second reason. Shillong is a place which is calm and quiet. The peace one can feel there is something which cannot be found anywhere else. This makes it a perfect place to study and explore your inner self.
I used to hear about how there is a locational disadvantage due to air-connectivity issues in Shillong but, after spending a year here, I can say that people and guest faculties who visit here always mention how enjoyable and scenic their journey has been and express a wish to visit again. In no other campus would people be greeted and welcomed by glorious white clouds.
These are the things which make my campus unique and creates a conducive environment to learn and grow.
Which ABG company would you want to work for and why?
If given a chance, I would like to work for ABG’s apparel business. Companies such as Peter England, Louis Philippe and Allen Solly are the brands with which I associate with since childhood. As a kid, I used to think of them as foreign brands and hence, know how well they have been able to create and maintain their brand image. Also, I feel these are the brands which most of the common people in India also associate with and by working with a company like Peter England, I would be able to indirectly work for the masses of India.
