IIM Shillong – The Journey So Far | Prachi Bhardwaj
Choosing a B-School is an important decision for any student or a professional. A plethora of parameters ranging from placements, opportunities, exposure, academics and many more are considered by everyone. IIM Shillong qualified all the criteria, but the location was still a big question for me. At the end I decided to come, far away from home, to not only learn from the course but also learn about the new culture.
The most important part of IIM Shillong that sets it apart from any other college in the country is its foundation course on sustainability. A week-long program changed our perception about how we looked at the environment and we realized how crucial it is to make our businesses sustainable. The course was not only limited to the classroom, the best part of it was the visit to the sacred forests of Mawphlang.
Getting up at 5 a.m. for the field visit and trek was a struggle for many, but all worth it. The serene environment with lush green field and the constant drizzle made us all feel as if we have landed in heaven. We were in the lap of nature with so much calmness all around. We experienced natural beauty at its best. Before entering the forest we were given the instruction that we are not supposed to take anything from it nor leave anything behind apart from our footprints. Next was a challenging trek. Rocky terrain, muddy patches, waterfalls and streams- it had it all. After falling and slipping down multiple times we finally made it to the end. After the tiring trek the lunch was served amidst the green fields. It was an amazing and the most beautiful experience for us and we all came back with the memories we’ll cherish for life.
This is not all of it. IIM Shillong had a lot more in store for us with our Term 1 starting from the very next day. We did not even realize and we already had lots of pre-reads and assignments in our plates. Burning the mid night oil is an everyday ritual here. Needless to say sleep is a luxury. Life is challenging and gruelling for sure, but after all this is what I am here for. Its only three weeks here, but the learning has been immense. Working day and night, I am all determined and motivated to make the most out of these two years here.
