IIM Shillong – The Noisy Breeze Of The Fairy Tale
“Live close to nature and your spirit will not be easily broken, for you learn something of patience and resilience. You will not grow restless, and you will never feel lonely.”
― Ruskin Bond, A Book of Simple Living: Brief Notes from the Hills
Amidst the lush mountains and pine trees lies this beautiful town of Shillong, the heartbeat of the state of Meghalaya.
With picturesque views that continues to be a dream for every budding photographer in this campus, IIM Shillong is a league of its own. At present, it operates out of a campus that used to be the summer retreat of the erstwhile Maharajas of the Mayurbhanj dynasty. The campus lives up to the glory of those yesteryears.
Imagine acres of lush green beauty where you can lie down and work on a case presentation under skies that resemble forget-me-nots!
This wee little campus does not allow one to be lonely-you can always count on running into one of your batchmates, juniors, seniors or professors while on campus. We are one big family and IIM Shillong here is our home away from home. There is a lovely Quadrangle area between the hostels where you can come out for a breath of fresh air. This place has witnessed many-a- happy-days in the life of an IIM Shillong student with celebrations like Dandiya, Dahi Handi, Godsellers or Diwali. Then there is this event called Ranbhoomi, the inter-hostel sports competition, where you will see the volleyball court swarming with sports-enthusiasts.
Loneliness is never an issue as you will always find people matching your wavelength- the pillars of support who will relentlessly be by your side through all your highs and lows-from academic struggles to psychological issues and beyond-they are the best part of this roller-coaster ride.
Cloud-gazing used to be a childhood pastime-when all we wanted was to touch the sky. Today, the wish is granted. At the break of dawn, open your window and lo & behold! You see the clouds rushing into your room from nowhere.
There is also the cherry blossoms festival. The flurry of pink petals is something whose beauty remains unrivaled. The photographer within me calls out to the beauty of the hills and tries to capture these beautiful moments.
Before coming to Shillong, I have always considered golf as a game for the rich and the elite of the society. But in IIM Shillong, we have a golf course where we can go and live the dream of playing this exclusive game and get a taste of that coveted lifestyle. IIM Shillong is the only MBA institute in India that organizes a corporate Golf cup which gives us the opportunity to interact with industry stalwarts.
The real beauty of IIM Shillong is not the campus or the location, but the people you live with. While the serenity and the beautiful weather has made this place home, the place prepares us for an exciting world full of opportunities.
Which ABG company would you like to work for and why?
Working as a Business Analyst in the telecom sector, I have always been thrilled to take on challenges of working on new projects and technologies like SDN and on-demand services. The challenge and opportunities to take IDEA Cellular towards the enterprise customer sector will be a great experience for me.
