IIM Shillong Organises Its Annual Management Fest – Khlurthma 2017

“Khlur-Thma”, the name literally translates to a Battle of Stars, the origin of words being from the Khasi language, spoken primarily in the state of Meghalaya. Khlur-Thma was launched as a standalone event as annual B School Fest of IIM Shillong and continues to happen along with Golf Cup which gives the opportunity to interact with the corporates, business magnates and avid golfers. This year Khlur-Thma 2017 was themed as ‘STRIKE TO SURVIVE’. The event was held from 10th to 11th November 2017 along with the IIM Shillong Golf Cup. The event aims to capture the essence of today’s scenario where in the traditional concept of strive to survive doesn’t work anymore. It is time to rise above the phase of struggling and ACT. We need to strike each problem we are facing with the right acumen and understand the intricacies involved and break open the shackles that have held us till now. We need to STRIKE TO SURVIVE. With this central theme, Khlurthma witnessed active participation of students from various b-schools across India participating in competitions in the sectors of finance, marketing, operations, human resources and consulting.

Khlurthma witnessed participation from over 400 teams and over 30 b-schools from across the country. The events had a combination of both online and offline rounds to test the participants on various parameters. Only the best of the best teams faced off in the finals held during Khlurthma 2017 at the IIM Shillong campus. The extensive participation witnessed across all events bears testimony to the immense popularity of IIM Shillong’s flagship management fest. Participants not only got a taste of the warm hospitality of Shillong but also got to witness the natural beauty of Meghalaya. With cherry blossoms making an appearance all over the town, it was a memorable event for every participant.

Nestled amidst the serene mountains and known for its low temperatures, IIM Shillong seems like an unlikely setting for the heated combat between the teams as each event saw them battling out for the top spot. Day 1 began with a tree plantation drive to kickstart the management fest. Events such as JustBidIT, Coup-De-Grace, Touchstone, EcoMania, and Shrinkhala saw teams battling it out for pride, prestige, and prize! A plethora of judges from both academia and industry added to the immense learning that all participants took away from Khlurthma’17.

Working till late in the night and then waking up to the sound of a waterfall is certainly a one of a kind experience for all outstation participants. However, time certainly played spoilsport as they had to rush to the Day 2 events such as Corona, entHRal and Del’FIN’us.

The long list of events certainly didn’t stop there as the evening witnessed plenary sessions with the top CXOs of the country each discussing on the topic of ‘Inclusive Growth’ along the lines of financial, tech, operational and strategic implications. The word Khlurthma translates to the battle of the stars and it certainly was with teams from IIM Shillong, TISS Mumbai, IIT Madras and SCMHRD Pune emerging as winners in various events. The event concluded with the prize distribution ceremony and a grand dinner hosted by the Student Council of IIM Shillong.

Between the intense competitions and plenary sessions, student volunteers took participants on a trip some of Meghalaya’s best attractions. Participants got a feel of one of the wettest places on earth, Cheerapunji and the living root bridges of Dowki. Yet another testimony to the incredible hospitality extended to the visiting teams.

Every ending is the birth of a new beginning and the end of Khlurthma 2017 is a birth of a bigger and better Khlurthma 2018!
