IIM Shillong – The Place That Motivates Me Everyday

It was a chilly winter morning in Shillong when we just entered into our third term.  It felt literally like a pain but getting off the bed to meet new visiting faculty for course of my interest, business law, was worth it. Just a day before the session I read about the Professor Dr. Kalyan Kankanala over the internet. He seemed like knowledge worthy intellectual and very well experienced professional having obtained Doctorate Degree in Patent Law from the National Law School of India University, Bangalore and being Chief IP Attorney of an IP firm that he founded named as BananaIP Counsels. It was a 10:45 a.m. session and we were having our breakfast sitting out in sunlight and we spotted the professor walking swiftly towards classroom and the excitement grew further.

All of us including the Professor had assembled inside the classroom and the setup was being made by one of the technicians for the special laptop he was carrying which seemed to work with speech interaction. A strong and highly confident voice was heard after the setup was done. The firm voice welcomed us and asked the question about what is our understanding about the law. When the students started sharing their views, the professor interrupted the students saying that there is a component of class participation and since he cannot see the students should say out their names. As soon as he said so the whole class was amused as he was doing everything almost perfectly without any assistance. The professor then starts teaching using a PowerPoint presentation which was just flawless except for the confirmation part in which he asked whether he was on the correct slide of so and so topic. The session was on the history of law and how it is constantly evolving in nature. I got familiar with some aspect of law which I would have never understood otherwise.

It was one of the most inspiring and stimulating session of my academic experience so far. Academic session from a visually challenged faculty with such confidence and perfection was a great inspirational take away during the journey of my life at IIM Shillong which leaves me thinking that anything can be worked out no matter what situation we are in. Having faced a lot of difficult situations in life I got motivated to move ahead in life without fearing anything after experiencing this in IIM Shilllong. We can see the motivation in our everyday life but such motivational people is a fortune for the select few.

Which ABG you want to work for and why?

I would want to work for Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited if given a chance as I like the brands below the umbrella of that company and it would be exciting to handle the portfolio of products associated with it.
