The book we followed was “India: The Emerging Giant” written by Arvind Panagariya. The professor divided the post independent period of India into five phases on account of drastic changes in the Indian economy, and the corresponding political & social envelope encircled it. He explained how India evolved from a socialist republic of Nehru’s years, where the central planning was the bedrock with government at the forefront and private capital taking a back seat in a semi-closed economy. Further how the colonial past had shaped the mindset of the Indian population and its policymakers.
Then he gave a detailed insight on how India reshaped into a completely closed economy during the years of Indira, with socialism as the central theme with foreign capital and private capital considered as taboo. He gave a fascinating understanding of how the economics of the day had a bearing impression on the “Emergency Days”. Then he took us over the years of trifling change during Rajiv’s regime as PM and later on the 1991 economic liberalization and the years followed. It helped me comprehend why India had to undergo such a drastic transformation from its early ideals and the theatre of politics that shaped the present we live in. The class had a deep and everlasting impression on me and my outlook.
