JBIMS – The Legacy

The red bricked old building, renowned as Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS) resides in the heart of Mumbai, a place which attracts thousands of Management aspirants every year, and of which only a few make it to the prestigious Masters of Management Studies (MMS) course started by our former director Late Dr. K. S. Basu, Ex- Vice Chairman of HUL in 1965. Situated near Nariman Point, within close proximity of hundreds of companies like McKinsey, Air India, SBI etc. to name a few give our institute the industry exposure which is difficult even for other prestigious management institutes in the country.

A layman would always wonder, what is it in JBIMS that makes it so unique and attractive for thousands of students and industries. Well the answer lies in protocol and discipline our institute worships and teachers who make sure to imbibe it in each and every batch. The real asset our institute has are our teachers who teach every batch. We have the god of operations Mr. Boman Moradian teaching operations, President of JSW Group Mr. Sandeep Gokhale teaching Finance, stalwart of Marketing Prof. Nitin Ghadiyar teaching Marketing management and the list goes on. Having experts from industry teaching gives JBIMS a superior edge from mostly all other b-schools.

Having studied under such industry experts where it is difficult to differentiate between any of them, I have personally enjoyed Moradian sir’s lectures. A 65 years young (Sir always calls himself young rather than old) gentleman with a firm gait and strong voice made me spell bound in all his lectures with his in-depth subject knowledge taught with a touch of humanity. Sir always made sure that at the end of the day, we not only learnt the subject theory, but also learnt business cases and challenges from his experiences and also made sure we become good humans first and then implement all the knowledge gained in our practical lives. It is difficult for me to tell any one incident from his lectures because it was the entire journey that has inspired me.

Being a Finance enthusiast, JBIMS has been a dream come true for me, for I study Finance from some of the best industry experts. Having achieved my first target of getting into JBIMS and taking the first step in my career in Finance, now I strongly desire to be a part of a corporate group which would help me implement all the learnings and be a successful corporate finance professional. It would be a great opportunity for me if I get to work with Aditya Birla Capital Limited (ABCL) which holds all the financial services business of Aditya Birla Group. ABCL has offers services such as corporate lending, insurance, project finance, equity, broking etc. which is a wholesome package of learnings and opportunities for any Finance enthusiast. Given an opportunity I would want to work for Corporate lending and Project Finance domains under Aditya Birla Capital Limited.

At the closure of this essay I would like to thank Aditya Birla Group for providing our institute an opportunity for participating in the leadership competition.

JBIMS was established in 1965 by the University of Mumbai in collaboration with the Stanford Graduate School of Business. JBIMS is considered to be unique in management education as it is firmly rooted in the local soil and capable of articulating the Indian ethos. In the contemporary era, when globalization and liberalization are the buzz words, the institute has (without disturbing the said roots) ordered itself to meet the emerging challenges, sentiments and opportunities that are coming with the new economic order.
