Location, Academics, And Placements – On Choosing IIM Raipur
Choosing an MBA college can be one of the toughest decisions in one’s life until and unless you’re eligible enough for IIM A, B or C. Leaving the top 6 IIMs, the newer ones are having a neck to neck fight for being crowned as the best. I converted IIM Ranchi, IIM Kashipur and IIM Raipur on the first list. I was waitlisted in IIM Udaipur and IIM Indore, both of which seemed a distant dream. Talking about the ones I rejected, Kashipur and Ranchi, I had very little to choose from. I did not have the luxury of giving CAT 2018. Kashipur being near to Delhi NCR becomes the hot favorite of students of North India, also complemented by its location. Similar is the situation for Ranchi. I was very much tempted to join Kashipur so that I can be near to my family and friends. I wanted to be in an institute that can provide me the stage or Launchpad to announce myself to the world.
This was all about infrastructure and location. But these all things are secondary when it comes to the real purpose of choosing the colleges that is academics. Placements also play a big role in influencing one’s decision. Having the largest batch strength, the average package gave the truest reflection of the placements. The profile offered by the companies also showed that they consider us different from the rest. IIM Raipur has the most diverse profile of students among all IIMs. It is vital to consider the composition of the class as you will be learning from your peers, not just your textbooks. Studying with students from different states may enhance your knowledge of cultures and business, for example. The permanent faculty pool is adequate and teacher to student ratio is also good. It has the best international student exchange among all its peers (55 students out of 210 students, that 25%) . This will eventually become its USP in the coming years. Also being mentored by IIM Indore, which in itself is a premier institute, adds to its galore. The intake of the college this year involved only 69% engineers which is a great thing when you consider the general trend in IIMs. This brings in the required diversity and plays an important role in developing an individual.
Along with this, Raipur tops the list when it comes to fastest developing cities in India. The connectivity infrastructure of Raipur can match any metropolitan in terms of facilities offered. Being near to the industrial belt of Durg Bhilai, one of the largest in India, adds to the advantages of the college. Once the college moves to the new campus, it will not be bounded by physical constraints. I hope it will become on the most premier B-schools in India and will soon be competing with older IIMs for the brightest students and best companies. It has achieved so much in the small time frame that the only way is towards greatness!!
Which ABG company would you want to work for and why?
The Aditya Birla Group has demonstrated capabilities of creating large-scale profitable businesses from scratch as well as building the leadership position in the businesses acquired inorganically. The Group has a vast experience in promoting and growing consumer-facing businesses and brands in the apparel, as well as non-apparel sectors and in the process, have gained significant consumer insights.
Brands like Louis Philippe, Van Heusen, Allen Solly, Peter England, Idea Cellular, Birla Sun Life Insurance and Birla Sun Life Asset Management are among the leaders in their respective categories. Among the most trusted business houses in India, Aditya Birla Group is well known for its corporate governance and financial management.
The one such wing of ABG which I would like to work for is Hindalco Industries Limited. Yes, it is the largest producer of primary Aluminum across India and Asia. It is also the leading producer of Copper too. It serves as the nucleus of the Aditya Birla Group. Created in 1958, Hindalco opened an aluminum plant in the state of Uttar Pradesh in northern India in 1962. The establishment of the plant coincided with that of Rihand Dam in Renukoot. The combination brought several other industries to the area and as a result, it became a hub for industries in the coming years.
Seeing Hindalco grow all through my childhood, it was a pioneer of development for thousands of people living around it. The work culture is as good as any corporate you see around. The workers and the executives work for hand in hand and the plant is building on its strengths since the day of inception.
