Pre-Summers At IIFT

Hectic, hard-fought and trembling are the three words that describe the pre summers at IIFT.  Pre Summers is not the recruitment process of a company. It refers to the hiring process of clubs, cells and committees.

The Senior Club Coordinators(SCCs) and Senior Executive Members(SEMs) play a role which is none other than that of the HR Managers of a company. The irony of this selection is that you cannot even tell the respective interviewer that your club is my first choice, because our priorities were pre-decided.

We were in a tumultuous situation wherein we need to convince them that,” I want to work for you though you aren’t my first priority”. This experience was the first of its kind for most of us. During my first interview, I was completely bewildered when I was forced to make a choice between two clubs. It was quite evident that they were aware that I was about to surrender but I recovered and suavely conveyed the difference between remaining committed to work and prioritising the choices.

After the first interview I enquired with my friends about their experiences and most of them gave the same response. It was said that they would intimidate you by saying that you are not fit for the position and you would not be able to handle the responsibilities of a JCC or JEM which would shatter your confidence. But with me something unusual happened.

One of the SCCs started describing the incidents of Nilgai’s and wild dogs on the way from C9 to college campus and I was asked that, how would you manage all this while being alone? I was feeling completely out of place and started wondering whether I am in a college or a zoo? That interview ended with shuddering the castles of my self-confidence. Although I managed to keep my motivation on and kept preparing.

Just before the hiring process we would trawl the IIFT website for every information that was available for the particular club or committee. The funniest part about preparation is that you don’t know from which club or committee your next call would be. It’s like you are playing multiple games and learning their rules spot on while being sleep deprived. Friends were the only alarm clocks who kept on reminding when our roll numbers were called.

Overall it was a great experience, I was fortunate enough to convert a POR and now looking at all this after a week I can surely say that this was one of the best preparation of summers which we could have ever got.
