Recent Trends, Opportunities & Management Of Human Capital In Retail Businesses In India
Mr. Naveen Prakash, AGM, Corporate Talent Acquisition at one of India’s largest retail chain – Spencer’s Retail, visited the IME department for a talk on Recent Trends and Opportunities in the Management of Retail Businesses in India.
Mr. Prakash started the talk with an introduction to the retail market in India. With a total size of USD 530 billion, 47% of the market is urban, out of which 31% is modernized, while only 3% is modernized in rural India. The potential is to grow to USD 800 billion by 2017, with an even split between urban and rural areas and three-fold growth of modern retail in rural areas. This is the kind of potential the modern retail business holds in India. Also, apparel, furniture, jewelry and medicine have been the fastest growing sectors in retail.
Within the retail business, Mr. Prakash told the students that it is the repeat customers who actually drive the revenues, and the aim of Spencer’s is to focus on this segment. The driving idea behind the firm’s efforts is to bring to the consumers those products that are inconvenient to find anywhere else. He apprised about how building preference has been the aim of Spencer’s and not merely profitability, for it will be a definite outcome if the preference has been built.
Mr. Prakash acquainted us about the importance of understanding the psychographics of customers and making strategies accordingly. As an example, he related to the audience about Spencer’s smaller sized “hyper stores” in many localities instead of a few big ones, for providing a convenience that the Indian people majorly look for when shopping for grocery and another day to day items.
Another aspect which was discussed was less profitability in food products as compared to non-food products. But nonetheless, to maintain brand positioning, Spencer’s has been putting majorly food products in their smaller stores.
Talking about the scenario of the retail business on the whole, Mr. Prakash mentioned the importance of increased efficiency of back-end operations to the overall profitability. Also, since delivering absolutely everything to everyone was not feasible, targeted marketing becomes crucial. In order to create awareness of the offerings, tapping omnichannel i.e. both online and offline channels necessary as well as curtailing the losses in the back end is a must.
Mr. Prakash concluded with a briefing about the importance of noticeably understanding and implanting a single strategy that the firm wants to go for, be it selling volumes or capturing market share or any other. He parted with a message to the students about the huge potential in this sector a relatively low threat due to the large size of an untapped market and opportunities of growth.

IIM Ahmedabad Shortlist Analysis by InsideIIM - As predicted by us when the criteria first came out, majority of the candidates i.e. 400 out of the 543 General category candidates called by IIM Ahmedabad for interviews have come through the academic discipline route. This shortlist for General category students consists of 2 Doctors/people from the medicine stream (AC 1), 45 - Either CA/CS/ICWA (AC 2), 95 - From Commerce and Management (AC 3), 102 Engineers, 100 Science graduates, 61 Arts/Humanities graduates. This data also shows that there were only 2738 general category applicants to IIM Ahmedabad from the humanities background and only about 3500 in total from a pool of 1.95 Lacs who took CAT. Some perspective there!
@Somya - Your acads are good and you could do much better. You shouldn\'t go to any school just because of a year drop. Talk to us on http://konversations.com for one on one counselling.
@Prakash - as mentioned earlier, visit http://konversations.com for one-on-one counselling. For a general category student you can get calls from TAPMI, MISB, IFMR Chennai, BIM Trichy, GIM, Great Lakes Gurgaon, Welingkar among others
@Swati - The marks look enough for an HRM call. You will have to wait and watch no point speculating unless it is impacting your joining/application decision anywhere in the next 10 days.
Sir I am bsc cbz student. Dropped 3 years for medical entrance exams, could\'nt get through. Thought of doing MBA so I gave CAT 2016 without preparing. My score was 40%. X cbse- 88% XII cbse -84% Graduation score -70% till now. I will complete my graduation this year i.e. 2017. What should I do now? Get into any college through MAT and then prepare for CAT ,since I Cannot afford 1 more drop coz my previous drops would create problem adding one more to it would just get me in trouble. Also I am shortlisted through IBSAT.
Hi I got 86 percentile in cat 2016 which colleges should I apply for
My total score for XAT including the GK is 29-34 considering the different solutions provided by various sites. I have got quite low marks in DM. What is the probability for getting a call from XLRI (HRM)?
Please tell expected cutoff of Sibm Hyderabad
Hey, hiii...... I want to know that at how many marks do we get 91 percentile in x-gmat (XUB)
@Devanshi - We hope you have taken XAT and scored well. You will be eliminated if you havent scored the basic minimum percentile required.
Hi, I have got a profile based call from SP Jain but my CAT score is not within the minimum expected criteria. Will my interview still hold valid?
I want to get into information system of FPM program of IIM A , please guide me to achieve it.
I will be giving GATE CSE in 2018, but my undergrad subject is non - CSE. I am passionate about computers and willing to do research on this subject
I got 75% in 10th, 84% in 12th and 78 in UG. What should be my CAT score to get call from IIMs?
How do you analyse verbal section?
And also DI. I am performing very badly in DI. I am sure there is no conceptual gap. But still not able to find the accuracy and the consistency.
Hi Amrita! I hope you read this. As I said mocks are extremely important so you anyway have to give mocks now or you might find yourself giving mocks next year as well ( which I am sure you dont want to do). About the 2-3 chapters that you are not sure about.. No problem..while giving the mocks leave them..but practice them after mocks.. and start attempting them as soon as possible in the coming mocks..Analyse at least the other areas meanwhile.. See whether you are performing well in your well-prepared topics or not. That will be good.. and if you can cover the remaining 3 chapters quickly.. It will be Great!
1 advice I will give you is that you need not be proficient in all the topics of the exam..you can take chances on some infrequent chapters based on previous year\'s trends. Do not take chances on sure-shot topics like algebra or arithemtic.
But if you believe that you should and will go prepared with all the topics equally well then that is the best case! Let me know if it answers your problem. Feel free to nag me more!
Hi, I am sitting for CAT this year.... The problem with me is I am still pending with 2-3 chapters of maths. So I have not started taking the Mocks yet. I took 2 mocks where I performed very bad. So I thought it would better if I take mocks after revising the entire syllabus. But now only few days are left. So what should I do?? Instead of revising give the mocks or revision first. It would be great if you suggest something.
Around 40 days to CAT remaining. Should you do just be giving mock tests? Should you leave the topics you\'re weak in? To answer all your queries join us on a Live Chat with ARKS Srinivas from Vistamind at 6:30pm here. http://konversations.com/chats/8/info
