I have digressed.
The reason I am really writing this is to tell you why I chose IIM Raipur over other colleges. Waiting to hear from a college is one story, but actually choosing which one to attend is another. I am very fortunate to have been accepted to the IIMs, it was one of my dreams to be a part of this institution of national importance. So, in a sense, it wasn’t difficult for me to know it was the #1 college I wanted to attend out of all the ones I had been accepted into.
But let’s be realistic. IIM in itself is a brand name that Indian graduates are crazy about. If the IIT tag identifies you as a genius, young tech whiz, the IIM tag puts you on the ship of India's Industrial captains. In fact, the IIT-IIM guy is the typical Middle-Class Dream Boat. He is the cynosure of all eyes. A subject of admiration (and often adulation) among his friends, colleagues, and relatives. What the IIT/IIM tag promises the average Indian is a better life. The newspaper reports on the astronomical salaries during the placement seasons at these hallowed campuses helps bolster this promise.
The next step I took in deciding between the IIMs, took A LOT of research.
I looked at a bunch of websites, videos, and social accounts just to get an idea of the campus life at all the IIMs. Not only was academics one of the most important aspects in making my decision, the culture of campus life/location mattered, as well. At the time of my decision, I didn’t have a set idea of what major I wanted to pursue, though I am a bit inclined towards finance. Some of the other colleges and new IIMs I considered had smaller programs, humble alumni base, and poor international exchange programs. This is what I loved about IIM Raipur, it had so many options to choose from in the student exchange program and pretty much all the programs are great academically.
Long story short, these were the main aspects of IIM Raipur that won me over in the end:
ï‚·Outstanding academics overall
ï‚·Personable, incredibly intelligent professors
ï‚·So many opportunities in terms of networking/international relations/internships/job experience for students (which makes it worth the investment)
ï‚·Students from all over the country (I love meeting new people from different cultures)
ï‚·Extracurricular, volunteering, and internship opportunities more than you can count in one sitting
ï‚·Beautiful campus (and soon to be shifted to the new campus)
B School pride!!! (it’s hard to hide your own pride when you’re at one of the IIMs, trust me on this)
Last but not least, GREAT FOOD as compared to what College Hostel’s Mess are normally famous for ;P (totally worth drooling over)
There’s always a bit of uncertainty that comes along with every big decision.
But now that my first trimester of college is in full swing, I know I’ve made one of the best decisions of my life.
I could talk about IIMR all day… Go, Bruins!
So from here in IIM Raipur to wherever you are in the world reading this, I wish that you will eventually find that same reassurance in your decision to attend your future university.
Which ABG company would you want to work for and why?
I would be looking forward to working with Aditya Birla Capitals, because of my inclination towards finance domain. I have a desire to make finance simpler for the individual and help them live the life they want by enabling them to protect what they value, help them with the right investment options so that they can live the life they aspire to live and finance their needs and wishes.
