How many of us actually know what it feels like to have words screaming inside of us, pushing through our hearts, our minds, only to be knocked down by our mere lips?
Throughout my life at high school, I saw people giving speeches, addressing an audience, making presentations, and everything that involved facing a crowd and speaking. And how I dreamt of being in their shoes for once! I would always want to go up on the stage and address the audience, but, being an extremely shy person who suffered from stage fright, I always end up in a position where I could not even gather courage to initiate participation.
After suffering from this particular situation over and over again for years at a stretch, it was upon retrospection that I started to get a clearer picture.
Being successful in something does not depend on a person’s skill so much, as it does on the person actually doing it. I had always worried about what would have happened if my performance as a speaker was not up to the mark. However, it was only after a few terrible, self-doubt-inducing speeches that I could finally get into the habit of public speaking, post which, they started coming naturally to me.
And I was finally after two years of continuous practice that I finally gave the biggest speech of my life – an opening speech in the presence of over 700 people.
This was the story of just person. There could be, and there will be innumerable other participants in ABGLP who may have more stories to share, that impacted lives – in some cases, their own, in others, other’s.
