Indian Institute of technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad is a premier educational institute of this country engaged in imparting technical education since 1926. Its students have made their name in various industries globally and in the core sector industries we have a stronger presence. The Department of Industrial Engineering and Management was established in 1977 offering M. Tech programme in Industrial Engineering and Management (IE&M). Having run the M. Tech. programme in IE&M for two full decades, the department gained requisite experience as well as expertise for running the MBA program. Keeping pace with the changing times, the erstwhile Department of Industrial Engineering and Management (IE&M) was restructured and re-christened as Department of Management Studies and launched its MBA programme in 1997. The department has been able to make a mark in the industry, with the alumni making their presence felt across all the leading industries of the country. With the introduction of dual degree programme in the areas of Mining, Mineral and Petroleum Management, the department has taken a lead in emphasizing the effective management of core sector as well.
Since its inception, the department has been moving ahead, continuously in tandem with the growth and diversification in the business field maintaining constant interaction with various industries. To its credit the department has successfully completed several consultancy assignments, in-house and off-campus executive development programmes and specific research projects supported by AICTE, UGC, ICSSR, MHRD, DGMS, CMPFO, NHPC, Power Grid, CIMFR, CIL, World Bank etc.
The department has been constantly rated as A/A+ institute by the various rating agencies including AIMA-Business Standard, Business World, Business India, Outlook/C-fore etc. in their B-School surveys conducted from time to time. We have crossed these milestones in a period of just ten years. Latest of these milestone is NIRF ranking of 32 in India. The Department has a Training and Placement cell headed by a placement advisor working under the overall supervision of the Head of Department. The cell is instrumental in organizing Training and Placement for the students of MBA and M. Tech. programmes.
Apart from routine classroom teaching the students of Department of Management Studies have to actively take part in presentations, seminars, workshops etc. The students are required to work rigorously and the class room hours extend well beyond the 9 to 5 schedule. The concept is to train them in all aspects of the managerial practice. The faculty and the students of the department have also won laurels for the School by their all-round activities.

USP

CAMPUS
The central library of IIT Dhanbad is a big 7 storied, air-conditioned building. The library uses LIBBSYS integrated library management software. A campus-wide LAN connection enables staff and students to access E-resources in the library. A Research Documentation Cell has been set up by the library based on the research outputs. The library opens from 9:30 am to 9 pm on all working days and to facilitate the resident students the reading room on the 7th floor is open till 12 am. A cafeteria is there on the ground floor that provides several kinds of fast foods and beverages.
Quality of Classrooms, Labs, Libraries, and dining halls are satisfactory. They are clean and have a smart learning system. The whole campus has Wi-Fi.
Indian Institute of Technology Dhanbad has 12 hostel buildings, 7 for boys, 4 for girls and 1 for international students. More than 8000 students are accommodated in these hostels. Every hostel has spacious twin sharing rooms.
There are so many cafeterias all around the campus to facilitate students and staff in different parts of the campus. The main canteen is an epicenter for most of the student activities and is one of the oldest canteens in the campus. The canteen provides food, snacks, and beverages, apart from this main canteen houses a juice center, fruit counter, and a stationery shop. Ram Dhani (RD) tea shop is the oldest cafe in the campus with a typical ordinary tea shop outlook. The RD tea is one of the top common topics of IIT (ISM) students. The Amul canteen is an alternative to the main canteen that serves good food and also has a stationary and photocopy shop. Apart from these, there are many other cafeterias on different parts of campus like the cafeteria on the ground floor of the central library building.
Hangout spots:
There are a lot of hangout spots on the campus apart from the canteens and cafeterias. There are a lot of gardens and parks on the campus for students to relax and chill. Eco Vatika is a park with few trees, chairs, and a narrow stream, located near the Ruby (girls) hostel. This is a popular chilling spot for girls. The Rock garden located near the college entrance is another hangout area to take rest after the long walks inside the campus. Another hangout area is the Oval Garden in front of the heritage building. It is a beautiful garden with lots of flowering plants and sculptures made out of plants. In February an annual flower show is conducted to showcase the variety of flowers and plants in the garden which were present even during the Mughal Empire. Another attraction of this garden is a 2.5 million-year-old tree fossil that is placed in the center of the garden.

CONNECTIVITY
Reach Dhanbad by train from Howrah or any other place then you can come IIT (ISM) Dhanbad by auto rickshaw or car. It is about 1.5km from Dhanbad Rly Station.
If you want to reach by air then you need to reach KOLKATA airport then you have to go to Howrah station and then by train to Dhanbad Jn. ( Howrah to Dhanbad is just 4–5hrs you will easily get many trains, chair cars types are also available like Shatabdi.)

Selection Criteria

The eligibility criteria of MBA Programme is as follows:

  • Graduates (or professional qualification equivalent to that of a University degree recognized by the UGC) in any discipline with first class or having 60% marks or CGPA of 6.5 out of 10 (55% marks or CGPA of 6.0 for SC/ST/PD) in their degree from a recognized University with Mathematics/Statistics as one of the subjects in Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Final year students (of the above-mentioned program) are also eligible to apply. Such candidates, if selected, will be admitted provisionally, on the condition that they meet all the requirements for the qualifying degree before start of the program and will produce provisional certificate of completion of the program latest by September 30, 2020.
  • Shortlist for interview process will be announced by the respective institute. Only those who are shortlisted will be invited to the interview process (the Written Ability Test and Personal Interview). Shortlisted applicants will be contacted to upload copies of necessary certificates by the respective institute.
  • All applicants should have a valid CAT score.
  • The students who have B.Tech degree from IIT with 8.0 CGPA out of 10 are exempted from appearing in the CAT.

The eligibility criteria of MBA Programme in Business Analytics is as follows:

  • Candidates with B.Tech degree in any discipline from a recognized university/institute with at least 60% marks in aggregate or 6.0 out of 10 CGPA [55% marks in aggregate or 5.5 CGPA out of 10 in case of candidates belonging to SC, ST and PwD (Differently Abled Categories*)] will be eligible for the programme
  • Final year students (of the above-mentioned program) are also eligible to apply. Such candidates, if selected, will be admitted provisionally, on the condition that they meet all the requirements for the qualifying degree before start of the program and will produce provisional certificate of completion of the program latest by September 30, 2020.

The eligibility criteria for MTECH Programme in I & EM is as follows:

  • Candidates must possess a Bachelor degree in Engineering/Technology or equivalent or a Master degree in Science, from the institutes recognized by UGC/AICTE/Government. The qualifying degrees for each of the M. Tech. Programmes are mentioned in Table 2.
  • Candidates with equivalent degree and discipline of professional bodies (like Institution of Engineers (India), Institute of Chemical Engineers, Aeronautical Society of India, Institute of Electronics & Telecommunication Engineers, Indian Institute of Metals, etc.) are not eligible to apply in any M. Tech programmes of this institute.
  • Candidates must have valid GATE score (remains valid at the time of Admission) in the appropriate GATE Paper
  • Candidates seeking admission to M. Tech. Programmes of the Institute should have Minimum 60% or CGPA/CPI of 6.0 in 10 point scale (without rounding off) in the qualifying degree for UR/OBC/EWS candidates.
  • Minimum 55% or CGPA/CPI of 5.5 in 10 point scale (without rounding off) in the qualifying degree for SC/ST/PwD candidates.
  • Candidates graduating/ graduated from IITs with B.Tech. Degree having CGPA 8.00 and above (on a scale of 10) can apply without GATE Score. The respective department as per allocated seats will review such applications. The number of seats for such candidates will be supernumeric.

Courses Offered

1. MASTER’S IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

MBA programme offered by the department comprises of fourteen core courses, eight elective courses, a summer internship component and a thesis component. First two semesters of the course are dedicated to core courses and practical sessions on communication. At the end of second semester, students undergo summer training/internship at an organization for six weeks. In second year of the course, students choose their specialization, based on which they select from a wide variety of elective courses offered in third and fourth semester. Students can opt for specialization in following functional areas: Finance, Operations, Marketing, and Human Resource Management. Over the course of second year, students also work on a capstone project under guidance of a faculty mentor. Report of the capstone project must be turned over before end of the course and comprises an important part of the evaluation component of the program.


2. MASTER’S IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (BUSINESS ANALYTICS)

MBA (Business Analytics) offered by the department comprises on eleven compulsory courses, six elective courses, lab courses on machine learning, business analytics and database management, an industrial training component and a thesis component. First and second semester are entirely devoted to core courses. At the end of second semester students undergo industrial training at an organization for six months. In third semester students work on a dissertation under guidance of a faculty mentor for partial fulfilment of requirements under the program. In fourth semester students study six elective courses from a wide array of relevant courses available to them.


3. MASTER’S IN TECHNOLOGY (INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT)

Tech (IEM) program offered by the department comprises of eleven core courses, seven elective courses, software laboratory, an industrial training component and a thesis component. First semester is entirely devoted to core courses. Second semester comprises of four core courses and five electives. At the end of second semester, students undergo industrial training at an organization for six weeks. In third and fourth semester students work on a dissertation under guidance of a faculty mentor for partial fulfilment of requirements under the program.
