IIM Sambalpur

About

The Government of India approved the proposal to set up six new Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) across the country in its Budget 2014-15 presented in the Parliament of India on June 24, 2015. The new IIMs or the 3rd generation of IIMs are IIM Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), IIM Bodh Gaya (Bihar), IIM Sirmaur (Himachal Pradesh), IIM Nagpur (Maharashtra), IIM Sambalpur (Odisha) and IIM Amritsar (Punjab).

Mentored by IIM Indore, IIM Sambalpur was registered as a Society under Societies Registration Act, XXI of 1860 on August 19, 2015. The present campus of IIM Sambalpur has been set up at Jyoti Vihar, Burla, Sambalpur, Odisha. IIM Sambalpur has been allotted a piece of land measuring over 237 acres in Basantpur, for the permanent campus by the Government of Odisha.

USP

IIM Sambalpur, one of the most recently established Indian Institute of Management, is under the mentorship of one of India's top management institutes - IIM Indore. This means that many faculty members at IIM Indore take classes at IIM Sambalpur, and the pedagogy and curriculum at IIM Sambalpur are similar to that of IIM Indore, thereby replicating the elite stature of the Indore based institute.

Selection Criteria

The basic objective of IM- Sambalpur's admission process is to identify meritorious candidates for admission under each category of admission, viz., General, OBC, SC, ST, and PWD/DAP. While merit is the prime consideration, the Institute recognizes a possibility of skewed student structure in favor of male gender and engineering and related subjects at graduation in the normal course. Hence, it strives to ensure a better balance in opportunities among different subject streams and genders. It is also part of IM Sambalpur's approach to duly recognize academic consistency and industrial experience.

The admission process of IIM-Sambalpur consists of: (a) CAT Examination
(b) Shortlisting candidates for Personal Appearance (PA) process.
(c) Conducting the PA process composed of Written Analysis (WA) and Personal Interview
(PI)
(d) Preparing the Final Selection List (FSL) based on CAT score, PA score and profile score including Work Experience (WE) score as assessed during the PA process, the score for Past Academic Performance (PAP) and any other criterion included.

1. Criteria for Shortlisting for the PA process:

The 11 IIMs {IIM Bodhgaya, IIM Jammu, IIM Kashipur, IIM Raipur, IIM Ranchi, IIM Rohtak, IIM Sambalpur, IIM Sirmaur, IIM Trichy, IIM Udaipur and IIM Visakhapatnam) have decided to adopt a common process for Personal Appearance (PA) process to be coordinated this year by IIM Ranchi.

Like Common Admission Process (CAP) 2018, the performance of the candidates in WAT and Pl in CAP 2019 would only be considered for preparing the merit list. In other words, only those candidates would be considered who would appear for WAT and Pl for CAP 2019.

The cut-off percentile marks for eligibility for PA process in the three sections and the total CAT
The percentile for different categories of students is mentioned in Table 1.

All candidates meeting the requirements mentioned in Table 1  and applied for admission to IIM Sambalpur are eligible for consideration for shortlisting for PA process. The shortlisting is done by IIM Ranchi for a common  pool of 11 IIMs.

**  In the case of female candidates under the general  category, the overall cut-off percentile marks for eligibility for the PA process is  >= 90. However, getting an overall CAT percentile of >= 90 does not automatically guarantee a  call for the PA  process.  Within this pool of eligible candidates,  the final list of candidates to be called for  PA will be decided strictly based on the order of merit and as per the requirement of IIM  Sambalpur.  This separate  PA  process comprising both  WA and  Pl will be independently conducted by IIM  Sambalpur.

The WAT & Pl scores will be pooled from  IIM  Ranchi  (common pool for 11 IIMs).

The merit list for admission to IIM Sambalpur will be prepared based on the criteria mentioned below:

  1. 2. Criteria for Preparing the Merit  List:

The criteria for preparing the merit list will be as follows

  • CAT Score*: 35 %
  • Personal Appearance (WAT & PI): 20%
  • Profile: 45%

*CAT Score of the candidate divided by Maximum  CAT  Score among candidates who have applied to IIM Sambalpur and attended the PA process.  It is clarified that the CAT Score would be used and not the CAT Percentile.

  1. a. CAT Score:  IIM Sambalpur will use CAT 2018 score
  2. b. Personal Appearance (PA):  IIM Sambalpur will consider the following  weights
  • Written Analysis: 5%
  • Personal  Interview:  15%

Candidates who do not obtain certain minimum scores in the  PA   process would not be considered for the merit list. The minimum scores would be decided by IIM  Sambalpur at its discretion.

  1. Profile: The following will be the breakup of the 45% component for Profile.
  • Academic  Profile:  10 %
  • Work  experience:  15 %
  • Diversity: 20 %

For Academic Profile, the following will  be the weights

10th Standard:  2%

12th Standard:  2% Under Graduation: 6%

The following would be the basis for scoring candidates in respect of their academic profiles.
