Ambitions Amidst Challenges, IIM Raipur
“They thought they were demotivating me…
I thought the situations were pulling me down…
But now I realize, that phase was just to make me what I am today”
Super excited to move to Pune, we were busy planning our new life in a new house, with all the changes that we were going to face in just a few months. It was around the month of March 2005, I guess, when I had just completed my final exams of the third class. Dad asked me casually, “What type of school would you like to study in?”. I don’t know why, but with an abrupt my reply was “The toughest and the best in Pune.” This reply was followed by a serious discussion between my dad and mom regarding what to do next. Even though my dad was skeptical about me adjusting in St. Helena’s ICSE pattern of schooling, my mom was pretty sure that I would take some time but will surely do well in the days to come.
I recollect a similar discussion in the year 2003, when they were in a dilemma to shift me from the Marathi medium school to the newly opened first English medium state board school of the small town Saswad that we were staying in. Nevertheless, they also knew that this school shifting was going to be more challenging than the previous one. But I was excited for the same, because since childhood I loved taking the tougher path.
6th June 2005, my first day at the new school was something I never imagined. I had dreamt of making new friends, with cool and different personalities, but the reality was completely opposite. I was disturbed with the repulsive behaviour of the peers that I was facing, but I knew that one day I would find my good friends and discuss the learning and syllabus of the school. When I shared this with my mother, she politely motivated me to be positive and work hard towards the main goal of studies and also be good to people, which will change the ‘perception’ of people. I never understood the meaning of the word ‘perception’ for a long time, but when I grew, I realised that schoolmates used to treat me so differently, just because I was from a small town, with not so fluent speaking skills and not of their education level. This disturbed me initially, but as the years went by, my parents kept motivating me to focus on the main goal of my existence there, which I followed and at the end of my school life, I had a bunch of happy memories, not of numerous friends, but of the way I stood strong and ended up to be one of the top students of the batch even amidst so much of mental stress.
This simple experience of my childhood taught me that no matter who is with me and what situations I face, it is up to me how I mould the negative experiences. I have two paths, feel low about the negative situation or stand strong to win the more important battles of life by challenging them. The choice of the latter makes me what I am today.
