One of the biggest challenge I face is saying no to people. I have a hard time refusing their request and am worried about hurting their feelings. While I was working , I faced a situation which required me to discuss, negotiate and say no to my manager to successfully manage a situation. I was part of the testing team and my responsibilities included providing the test sign off document to the client which indicated that our team had successfully tested the code and it was safe to deploy the code in the production environment. The testing team is involved in testing all possible scenarios that affect the system’s performance and ensuring the code is working as expected in every scenario. One of our clients had deployed a unexpected code change and it was our responsibility to test and ensure that this change would not affect the system. The deadline for this testing was short and unrealistic and my manager expected me to provide the sign off document to the client indicating that everything was working as expected. I knew it was not possible to test all the scenarios within this deadline and communicated the same to my manager. He was unwilling to listen and expected the sign off within the given time. It would be unethical to provide the sign off without thorough testing and I would be responsible if there was any issue in the production system after the sign off. I then had a discussion with my manager indicating the limitations of my situation and explained the consequence of providing a sign off without complete testing. I told him I couldn’t provide the sign off he wanted me to and if would be a breach of trust with the client to provide a sign off without complete testing. After a discussion, we arrived at a consensus where I would provide the client with a conditional sign off. This meant that the team would be ensuring the high priority scenarios are completed within the deadline and the low priority scenarios would be completed on a later date. The client was informed of the same and provided us with a list of high priority scenarios which was agreed by all parties. The team managed to complete the same within the given deadline and deployed the code successfully.
