Cement is another sector where the group has made its mark. When our home was getting renovated a few years back, we were a bit confused about which brand’s cement to use but as soon as we got to know that the UltraTech Cement falls under the roof of Aditya Birla Group, it became a no-brainer and we were really pleased with the final outcome. On getting to know that the famous Bandra-Worli Sea Link was also constructed with the use of UltraTech Cement, its reputation in my mind increased all the more.
Next comes the group’s non-ferrous metals business. For a person like me, wrapping up the food in aluminum foil paper so that it stays hot and fresh has always been one of the necessary requirements and Hindalco’s foil paper is one that I use more often than not.
The list can keep on going but now I would like to highlight some of my learnings from their journey thus far. One of the qualities which has impressed me the most about this group apart from their business strategies of market research, continuous improvements through feedback analysis, customer retention through after-sale services, etc. is the efforts they put in CSR activities and the measures taken to ensure that sustainability is maintained. Their efforts have also motivated me to indulge myself in CSR activities and help my organization maintain sustainability when I enter a corporate in the future. All in all, Aditya Birla Group has played a big role in my life till date be it personal or professional and the way it is expanding, I see it’s role increasing even more.
How you overcome challenges to achieve your ambitions in life so far?
While I was in Class-XII, my mother was diagnosed with the ill-fated disease of cancer. Life suddenly threw a completely unanticipated challenge as I had to look after my mom’s health, sister’s studies, household stuffs, education, etc. simultaneously without letting any have a major disruption. It was a challenging situation but it made me learn the importance of multitasking and time management as I allocated separate time for separate activities and tried to multitask whenever I could like making my sister sit with me for her studies while I was studying. Despite all the challenges, I managed to put up a good performance in the Board Examinations and also made it to a good engineering institution. After undergoing around 2.5 years of treatment in which my mother displayed immense courage and positivity, she passed away in Jun’13. Life suddenly turned completely downhill and multiple challenges lay ahead of me. From taking complete care of my father and my younger sister thereby ensuring that they came out of the trauma to focusing on the career ahead, I had to look after everything. I took care of the household, fared well in the semester examinations, indulged myself in some extra-curricular activities and also got recruited into TCS in the first round, an outcome which was really pleasing given the challenges I had overcome to attain it.
Moving to Ahmedabad for my TCS training brought forth a completely new challenge as there was no one else to constantly look after the household stuffs and hence, I guided my younger sister on how to go about it. Coming across so many new faces from different regions of the country posed a new challenge but I was up for it. The journey made me learn how to adapt myself in circumstances like these and helped me evolve as an individual. Being tagged to a project which expected us to be ready to work at any given point of the day made me develop the skill of flexibility. The skills that we were taught to learn and develop in training and in the project were completely new but that didn’t deter me as I took it as an opportunity to learn something new and broaden my outlook.
After working for few months in TCS, I realized that I should go for MBA because that is the field where I shall be able to reach my full potential. As I didn’t have much time and my daily office routine was also quite hectic as I had to travel around 50km, it was a challenge to perform well in the MBA entrance examinations and I had to manage my time very judiciously. I performed well in them but failed to convert a few good calls which really disappointed me as I had squandered few golden opportunities but I didn’t give up as I knew I had the potential and hence, I started preparing early for the next attempt and worked intensely on my less strong areas so that I don’t let the opportunities go waste.
At the end, my hard work and perseverance bore fruit and I made it to NMIMS, Mumbai. I have faced multiple challenges in the path to reach my ambition thus far but every challenge has taught me something or the other. Perseverance, resilience, hard work, optimism, etc. have been few key learnings from the life experiences I have had thus far and they have also made me imbibe the never-say-die attitude.
