SCMHRD Leadership Series – When Corporate India Visited The Campus – Part 2

The Leadership Series going on in full swing had reverent corporate leaders visiting the campus one after the other. The second week witnessed esteemed people sharing their insights and views on various topics.

On 20th July 2018, SCMHRD had Deodutta Kurane, Group President – Human Capital Management at YES BANK, a Gold Medalist in Industrial Relations and Welfare from XLRI, Jamshedpur who has over 30 years of rich experience in diverse facets of HRM across industries. He highlighted the YES BANK’s vision to become a Large High Quality Bank. He also spoke about how they use ART – (Agility, Relationship and Technology) approach in banking. Towards the end, he shared his PULSE formula for success which elaborates to P – Passion U- Uniqueness L- Leadership S- Social Skills E- Energy and Enthusiasm.

The session was followed by a book launch on the 21st by Ms. Aparna Sharma, ex CHRO, Greaves Cotton Limited, wherein she launched her new book “Between U & Me” and talked about failures and the power of resilience by telling her own life story.

Continuing the streak of valuable insights, on the 23rd, we had Mr. Pramod Sadarjoshi on campus who has worked with Oracle as the Senior Director- HCM Strategy and Transformation, Asia Pacific talking about the importance of being comfortable in one’s own skin. We were apprised of the VUCA(Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous) world wherein we try to make sense of the constantly changing challenges brought on by politics, economics, society and the environment. He ended the session by teaching us how to balance our creativity with cognitive intelligence.

Next day, SCMHRD was happy to host our very own Alumnus- Mr. Manish Chum, Director and Head HR – Global Product Organization – India Region at Whirlpool Corporation, on campus. Mr. Manish conducted a crisp and candid session with the students believes that in life – ‘Extremes never exist’. He talked about how essential it is to showcase other peoples’ success when you climb the ladder, as then – your success is not your success but a result of the effort of the team under you. He also mentioned that the LINES ARE GETTING BLURRED nowadays in terms of the way jobs are being defined and so, it is best to stay as relevant and aware as possible.

What followed next on the 26th of July was an illuminating session by Mr. Fakhri Sarjan who’s the Managing Director and Chief Risk Officer at Barclays, Germany with a career spanning 25 years in firms like Deutsche Bank, HSBC etc. He has been a part of the change and launch projects of Retail Banking, Cards and Strategic Head- Quarter Global Portfolio Management. He made the students learn through case studies and contemporary events happening across the financial world. The session helped immensely in grasping concepts and applications of analytics in Enterprise Risk Management, Stress Testing, Financial Models and financial statement analysis.

Taking forward the theme of leadership was Mr. Rajesh Nambiar, a Symbiosis alumnus and ex-CMO of Birla Life insurance who took the stage by storm and left a strong impression on the students on the 28th of July. He gave the students a glimpse into the 11 commandments he lived by, namely living smart, being humble, being apolitical, having a hobby to manage stress, teaching and learning, never talking behind someone’s back, knowing the nuances of a culture, not killing the kid in oneself, having a growth plan, being fearless and last but not the least – being responsible at social occasions. The lessons were peppered with anecdotes from his own life, giving them a fresh flavour. Students clung to every word that he said given the practicality of his views.

The next day began with Mr. Amit Kasliwal, a corporate leader and motivational speaker, visiting the SCMHRD campus to give insights into leadership and networking. He has an experience of around 15 years with Ford wherein he started with being the Regional Manager in 2007 and is now the Country Head- Corporate Sales. He emphasized the strength of diversity and the importance of networking which essentially happens more effectively within a diverse group. He talked about how and why listening, living in the moment, empathy and humility are indispensable qualities of a true leader. Adding a spiritual element, he helped us understand the power of meditation which is one of the sinews of better living. It was inspiring to see a person achieve the perfect blend of corporate and spiritual success.

The final day witnessed Ms. Diksha Fouzdar, an alumnus of our 2009 batch currently working with DIAGEO as a Senior HR Manager throwing light on various career ladders for all specializations. She also spoke about the struggles and hurdles of life, emphasizing particularly on how women need to keep picking themselves up in various stages of their lives.

All the sessions had the students completely engaged and come up with numerous questions. Trying to delve deep into business dynamics with the help expertise provided by SCMHRD, students are sure to transition from a B-School to the Corporate world swiftly.
