As well described by the residents of Lucknow, the city of Nawabs, Kebabs and Tehzeeb, has a lot more to offer than it may seem. And before you begin reading the article, remind yourself of the saying "Muskuraiyye ki aap Lucknow mein hain". (Smile because you have found yourself in the city of Lucknow). “Muskuraiyye ki aap Lucknow mein hain” – There is a lot about the city that is captured in the phrase and yet there is a lot left uncovered, and hence the reason for this article. So let’s take you on a ride to this glorious city.

Heritage

The journey starts at the Rumi Darwaza, a 60 feet tall, ornately covered gateway that opens the doors to old Lucknow and welcomes one and all to the city of Nawabs. Just next door is Bara Imambara, the city’s most famous monument, an epitome of Awadh architecture. There is every possibility to get lost in its fascinating and mind-boggling 489 identical doorways but you need to take a tour of it most certainly! Also, visit the ancient Bawli (stepwell) and discover how the magnificent well was used to spot the enemy from a distance. Visit the neighbouring Chota Imambara, known for its elegant architecture and profuse decoration with its chandeliers and crystal glass lamps.

Culture

Often synonymous with tehzeeb - the subtle art of fine mannerisms and polite conversations, Lucknow has flourished as a center of culture and art. You can witness varied elements of culture from the busy chowks to erstwhile kothas, from the poetry and ghazal sessions to the 'Lucknow Mahotsavs' – they are bound to leave you spellbound.

Cuisine

Delicious khasta kachoris, barras and pooris with hot chickpea sabzi is how you start the day in the city of Nawabs, especially at its well-known center at Rati Lal’s in Aminabad. Jalebis at Net Ram Mithai and the malai-makhan (foam milk) are the signature sweets of the city. Add Raheem’s kulcha and mutton nihari to your checklist. Finally, the list is certainly incomplete with the most delicious and mouthwatering galouti kebabs made from 160 different spices available all day long at the famous Tunday Kebabi.

Travel

The scenic landscapes of Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Rama (135 km), the spiritual city of Varanasi (305 km), the monument of eternal love and one of the wonders of the world, the Taj Mahal in Agra (333 km), the lust green spots of Nainital (380 km) and the wilderness beauty of Jim Corbett National Park (400 km) and Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary (45 km) make up the list of weekend attractions around Lucknow.

Lifestyle

The restaurant chains and the happening night cubs can be encountered in the streets of Gomti Nagar and Aliganj while the traditional karkhanas, where the craftsmen work with traditional handicrafts of Chikankari and Lucknowi Zardozi encircle the Gol Chowk. Hazratganj and Aminabad house the popular market places in town and are well-known for bridal shopping.

Thereby from cuisine and culture to travel and lifestyle, Lucknow has a lot in store for you! So get ready to get mesmerized in the city which makes you say “Muskuraiyye ki aap ….”
