Realizing the fact that I am big enough to have my own room, my father decided to move on to a larger flat. I, being a kid, didn’t have the slightest idea of what it was going to be like to move to a new place. To make me get acquainted with the new flat, every Sunday my father used to take me out to the construction site. I used to ask him why he would do that and in return, he would just tell me to wait. After a few visits, when I had figured out how the structure was going to be, I started forming a picture in my mind about how my room would look like. After all, this was the first time I was getting a room of my own. Even though I knew my wild ideas were going to be spurned by my mother, but still that didn’t stop me from daydreaming. I literally saw my home grow from nothing and thus an emotional bond was created even before we had moved in. Amidst all these emotions, one thing was common in all my visits, which were the bags of Ultratech Cement, which made my dream home into a reality. Now when I look back, I realize how crucial it had been to imbibe the feelings of home and emotions in me. Coming to the day of the puja before our first stay in the house, all of us got our ethnic wear from Pantaloons which boasts a large collection of apparels. The night party involved a long list of guests, so we decided to go for western clothing. That was also the first time my father brought me to Grasim shop to get a suit for me made for the occasion. I was elated as all along I had seen the same thing been done for him. I stood firmly while the tailor was taking my measurements. I don’t know why, but I felt that I had attained a level of maturity in my father’s eyes. That night I donned the suit with great pride and got everyone’s compliments of how good I was looking. That day was really special in my life and the one common thing that made it all come together was Aditya Birla Group.
Being an Electronics and Communication Engineer, I managed to crack a job in the most valuable IT Company of India i.e. Tata Consultancy Services. On one hand, I was glad that I had received the job while thoughts were also working in my mind regarding how I would handle the coding aspect of the job as I was very weak in it. As it was the first company that came to our campus, those who had cracked it was not permitted to sit for the companies that came next. I even attempted to apply for the core companies off-campus, but wasn’t able to get through. But only one thing was clear in my mind which was to make the most of this opportunity to make a good start to my career. Not everyone is lucky enough to get a job in such a prestigious organization on their first attempt. For a smooth transition from college life to corporate life, TCS has a learning platform which required to be completed in order to get the joining letter. So I, along with my friends was rushing through them without paying much attention to the details just to get them done with. This resulted in a lack of in-depth knowledge of the subject. I got my joining letter early, just as my college was over. TCS has this process of putting the candidates through ILP (Initial Learning Program) where they are given hands-on training about a particular technology. The location of my training was in Guwahati. This, being my first time staying out of my hometown, was quite challenging as I wasn’t sure what to expect over there. Not to forget the emotions of typical Indian parents added to my worries. Once I got there, I realized it wouldn’t be easy. This was my first time staying in a hostel, sharing room with colleagues, taking care of my clothes right from washing to ironing, everything had to be done on my own. Along with that came the rigor of the work to be done at the office. We were given training and projects based on our learning. Initially, everything seemed very difficult, right from taking care of my own health and managing the studies. Not being from the computer sciences background needed extra practice, but I was able to comprehend the technology thanks to my instructors and friends. I had my goal clear in front of me which was to make myself a good professional in whatever work I was given. That required a great deal of effort as it was beyond my engineering knowledge. However, I didn’t give up and was eventually able to get through the curriculum with flying colours. Those two and a half months I spent there was sort of a game-changer in terms of my life. It made me realize the difference between college and the corporate world. All the teachings I received, both as part of the curriculum and life molded me into a person that I had desired to be.
