Aditya Birla Group-#BigInMyLife. A journey like no other. Offering innovative products and services. Reaching out to millions globally and adding value to their lives.
What is Big?
Big is massive. This is quite evitable from the fact that 0.1 million mt of UltraTech Cement went into the construction of Mumbai’s marvellous Bandra-Worli Sealink. Big is also microscopic. Birla Carbon is a world leader in the manufacturing and supply of carbon black additives. The tire in every second car in the world has Birla Carbon. Big is indispensable. Grasim Industries is the world’s 4th largest producer of insulators. Big is the lifeline. A large share of the copper requirement of Indian Railways is fulfilled by Birla Copper. Every 3rd Aluminium is made by Novells Aluminium. Big is all about great style. ABFRL hosts India's largest fashion network with over 11,000 points of sale, which include close to 2,500 exclusive ABFRL brand outlets of Pantaloons, Ralph Lauren, Van Heusen, Allen Solly, Louis Philippe, Forever 21 etc. across 750+ cities and towns, 4,900+ multi-brand outlets and 4000+ department stores across the country. Big makes distance disappear. Vodafone Idea Limited is the leading telecom service provider in India and second largest globally. With 1,850 MHz of total spectrum holding, over 200,000 unique GSM sites and ~235,000 kms of fibre, the company offers superior voice and broadband connectivity across India, covering 92 per cent of the population and reaching nearly 500,000 towns and villages. Vodafone Idea’s sustainability initiatives are focused on energy conservation, waste minimisation and carbon footprint reduction. But what make ABG #BIG are the diverse employees. The Aditya Birla Group has employees of 42 different nationalities working in 34 countries making it a dream company to work for any person.
Inspired by the ideology of energy conservation and waste minimisation, I co-founded Prajawal Enactus, NPTI in my 3rd Semester of Engineering. Enactus is an international non-profit organization that brings together students, academic and business leaders who are committed to using the power of entrepreneurial action to improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need. We started a project which aimed at recycling and reusing of CFLs at minimal prices. A CFL used 1/3 the electricity and last up to 10 times as long as incandescent bulbs. Replacing just one bulb can reduce carbon emissions by half-ton out of the atmosphere over the life of bulb. But CFLs pose a major threat to the environment if not disposed properly. Improper disposal is harmful for the environment due to presence of neurotoxic mercury. We explored the technology used in CFL and found a way of re-using the bulb by a component level repairing system. We decided to target the un-organized sector of our society and trained them in the basic skill of repairing CFLs and manufacturing new bulbs. This helped them to add to their income and meet their basic needs. We presented this business model in the B-Ception competition of Department of Management Studies, IIT-Delhi and were awarded the first prize for the most sustainable business strategy. With the introduction of LED in Indian market, we devised a very cost-effective model of manufacturing them. We got an opportunity to train the inmates of Tihar Jail in the skill of manufacturing LEDs and hence live a respectful life after serving their terms. As a part of awareness campaign, we also created Limca Book record for collection of maximum faulty CFLs and LEDs in a day. The impact from project Prajwal was #Big in thousands of peoples’ lives.
