It did not feel as real to be get an admittance from SIBM- Bengaluru as it was when I started shopping to prepare for it. I realized that it was time to get clothes to impress because after working in an IT job for two years where I could where almost anything I wanted, coming daily in formals was going to be a huge step. Near my home, we have a Louis Philippe outlet and that is where I went to purchase my formals. I saw the extensive collection they had and was almost lost. Trying on various shirts and trousers was a great experience and even greater wake-up call. Little did I realize while trying it that the clothes that I would be trying were what would not just keep me comfortable but would make me feel accomplished, powerful and confident.
Naively I asked the shopkeeper, “Why is it that these foreign companies are so good at making such high standards clothing?”. He looked at me, smiled and said that the suit I am wearing is manufactured by an Indian company – the Aditya Birla Group. I was dumbfounded thinking that how a cement manufacturing company forayed into fashion.
On my way to the airport later that day after buying the clothes that I liked, I did a quick google search on the Aditya Birla group and that is when I understood how huge they truly are. Apart from Louis Philippe, they also own other major luxury clothing brands along with providing the raw materials to build Mumbai’s pride – the Sea Link to having holdings in many other companies manufacture mobile phones, tires and generate electricity
A company with humble beginnings after independence is now a market leader in various fields not only in India but also has a worldwide standing and we often do not even realize their contribution to our lives.
Setting goals and targets is one of the most important things that a company does and is also important in an individual’s life. The biggest challenge I have faced is pursuing a career where I was not adequately engaged. After my under-graduation, I joined one of the ‘dream’ companies and was initially content with life. However, at times I felt that I was becoming stagnant and monotony was setting in. I began to wonder if this was all there is. It affected my confidence, self-esteem and sent a knock-out blow to my career goals.
After working for almost two years and multiple projects coming simultaneously coming an end, I stood at a crossroads with varied option to pursue and realized that I did not know where I saw myself after five, ten and fifteen years. I realized it was time to set some goals and I asked myself was whether I wanted to be someone who was just a technical employee or an someone who was wanted to climb the corporate ladder. Another question was to whether pursue my ambitions for a career in management or go for a master’s education in a higher technical course and go the academic way. The choices were plenty and time constrained. The challenge in this short span of time was to look at the various possible futures and judging where I really saw myself going. Finally set basic long-term goals of pursuing a management degree.
Based on these long-term objectives the short-term steps came easy. Starting with MBA entrance exams I took admission into MBA at SIBM-Bengaluru and have made a career switch from IT to management studies based on where my real interests and competencies lie.
