In this era of globalisation, Aditya Birla Group (ABG) is the paramount example of an entity’s omnipresence. ABG, as a multinational conglomerate, having set foot in more than 35 countries globally.
ABG is the world’s largest manufacturer of carbon black, with its facilities in countries like the Unites States of America, Canada, Brazil, Italy, Egypt, Vietnam, South Korea, China, and India. The extent of it’s reach can be understood by the fact that the tire in every 2
nd car in the world has Birla Carbon in it. Furthermore, ABG also owns Novelis Inc., which is the largest producer of aluminium in the world, supplying to major companies like Samsung and Coca Cola. In Asia Pacific, its presence can be seen in countries like Philippines, where it owns and operates the country’s largest textile mills, Thailand, Sri Lanka and UAE, where it owns Dubai-based Star Cements. In India, the companies owned by ABG range from Hindal co, the world’s largest aluminium rolling company, to Vodafone-Idea, the world’s 2
nd largest telecom operator, and UltraTech Cement. Furthermore, it leverages the conglomerate’s experience in textiles and owns several clothing brands such as Louise Phillippe, Allen Solly, and Peter England, which also have presence in Sri Lanka and Nepal. It operates a multi brand fashion retail chain Pantaloons which it acquired from Future group and also acquired exclusive online and offline rights to American fast fashion retailer Forever 21 in India. The magnitude of it’s operations in textiles can be understood from the fact that ABG sells 2 garments every second around the globe.
The presence of Aditya Birla Group in my life cannot be overemphasized. I have been a stakeholder in ABG in many major aspects of my life. Clothing resonates with pantaloons which drastically changed the way people perceived clothing and fashion, it changed me. Providing clothes in reasonable price it became one stop destination of clothing for every occasion needs and is so still today. Being a resident of Kolkata, I have grown up travelling in the taxi’s of Hindustan Motors’s Ambassador and more so, our family’s first car was an HM Contessa. One of my very early childhood memories involve being stunned by the astronomical sky inside the dome of the Birla Planetarium at Chowringhee, Kolkata. The nostalgia that surrounds it is unexplainable.
Chanllenges faced to achieve ambitions in life so far:
Since early junior school, I have always wanted to excel in life. However, my idea of success was a little different than what it was for most students around me. I was not a very bright student and struggled to get through a class or understand what was being taught. After a lot of handwork, which was put in by my parents on me I started enjoying school and excelling in my class. By middle school I was amongst the top 5 students in my class out of 60, securing 100/100 in various subjects like History and Environment studies. Around the age of 12-13 I was put under a national level swimmer to be trained in swimming. Like most of the teenagers of my age then I was extremely unhealthy and lived a very inactive life. Because of this, kids younger to be were able to swim and compete better than me. I was determined I had to do something about this, at that early age in life I understood the importance of healthy living and brought about a few lifestyle changes indulging completely in swimming so much so that I represented my school, Ashok hall Girls, Kolkata in the All India CBSE East zone swimming meet and stood first. That was the beginning of a new phase in my life and I went on to win several more swimming meets and later on led my school swimming team. I faced a similar struggle while trying to get through a Good business school in India, which with the same level of dedication and self motivation I was able to get through the business school of my choice.
