Seth Shiv Narayan Birla founded the Birla Group of Companies in 1857. What started as a cotton trading company in Pilani, is now in the league of Fortune 500. The group has contributed a lot to the economy of the country as well as transformed lives of many people by taking up various social activities. The group has a variety of products that we use or come across every day, hence the tagline “Big in Your Life”. From Idea, the largest telecom company in the country, Grasim, the world's leading producer of viscose staple fibre, Hindalco, a leading producer of aluminium and copper to Ultratech, the number 1 cement brand of the country, the group has excelled in diverse industries. Aditya Birla Group is one of India's largest conglomerates and acts as a holding company for more than 72 manufacturing and services subsidiaries throughout India. The group gives back to the society by engaging in various CSR activities like providing midday meals for 63 thousand children every day, providing 4.5 lakh solar lamps to school children. The group has also set up hospitals and medical camps that treat over a million patients annually.
The Birla Education Trust set up Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani which is among the best engineering colleges in the country and has helped many students in achieving their dreams. The group has also built many temples. Growing up in Delhi, Birla Mandir was one of the places I used to visit with my family every week.
What I have learned from the group are the values that they abide by: Integrity, Commitment, Passion, Seamlessness and Speed. Whenever I have faced any problems or challenges, I have always tried to overcome them by applying these values in my life.
I faced a challenging situation in 2018. I had prepared for the management entrance exams for a year but my performance in these exams was not up to the mark. I was not offered admission by any college of my liking. I was disappointed by the result but had the self-belief to try again. My goal was to get admission in one of the top MBA colleges of the country. So, I decided to prepare again for the exams, which meant preparing again for a year and staying focused on my goal throughout. I was determined to do well in the exams this time. I stayed committed to my goal and worked sincerely towards achieving it. All the effort and hard work that I put in, finally gave rewards, and I performed really well in the exams. I got shortlisted by many of the top colleges. I knew that this was only the first step towards my goal and I had to perform equally well in the consequent rounds. I kept preparing with the same determination and passion. I performed well in the consequent rounds too and was offered admission by many colleges. Finally, I decided to join SIBM Pune, which was one of my dream colleges.
