Aditya Birla Group or as the world knows it ABG, is a multi-faceted conglomerate having imprints across geographies in various sectors ranging from manufacturing, telecom, financial services to fashion. A Fortune 500 company with a net worth of US $44.3 billion, Aditya Birla Group has etched it’s name by taking India to the World. Being the one of the private sector conglomerates in India, Aditya Birla Group is many things rolled into one. Among all these, the one that I can always relate to is its Hindalco & Ultra-Tech Business. Hindalco, the aluminium and copper manufacturing subsidiary of Aditya Birla Group is the flagship metal company of the group. It is one of the world’s largest aluminium rolling companies and one of the biggest producers of primary alumina in Asia. Ultratech is the largest producer of grey cement, ready mix concrete, and white cement in India. The brand embodies strength, reliability and innovation. These attributes help engineers create wonders for the country. Being an engineer having worked with the manufacturing industry, I have seen the impact that these two businesses have created in the lives of the people. While Hindalco forms the backbone of any structure, Ultra-Tech acts as the flesh and blood to give life to these structures. While I have worked closely with them, I aspire to imbibe the virtues of both Ultra-Tech and Hindalco in my life. This would mean standing up for what you believe in and taking steps that would impact the lives of many people in a better way. The massive Worli Sea Link gives me a sense of immense pleasure about how an idea can impact lives of all people living in and around Mumbai. Projects like these provide employment opportunities to lot of people, improving their standard of living. Moving forward with the incident where I feel that I was able to make an impact in changing the life of a worker. The incident happened during my stint with my previous organisation where we were working as the primary contractor for constructing a power plant. Since I was in the mechanical division, I was involved in the erection of a boiler. To avoid any delays in the deliverables from our side to the client, me along with one of my junior colleague and few workers from the sub-contractor’s side were working at the side on a Sunday. While the erection was going on, suddenly one of the workers hit his hand with a hammer and an iron rod pierced through his left palm. The worker shouted in pain and soon collapsed. Me and my colleague both being completely new to the job were completely perplexed and scared. We rushed to the sub contractor’s office to inform about the issue as the sub-contractor is the one who is providing the workers and looking after their welfare. To my surprise, the sub-contractor was least bothered and was not willing to take any action stating that doctors will not be available today. We took the onus on ourselves and went to the site hospital. But no doctors were present, and it would take at least 2 hours before any doctor arrives. By this time the situation had become more serious as worker’s hand had swollen up. I called the site vehicle and took him to the nearby hospital while my counterpart looked at the proceedings at the site. Finally, after few hours the doctor said that the operation was successful, and the patient was out of danger. Had there been any more delays, the worker might have lost his left hand. Post the incident I came back to the site, logged a complaint against our subcontractor, and completed the required sub-deliverable that was planned before calling it a day. Introspection to this incident makes me feel happy about the challenges life can throw at you and how the same increase my learnings exponentially.
