He has completed his masters from prestigious Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar (XIMB) and graduation in B.Tech from NIT Calicut. How I went about reaching out to Mr. Mahapatra and convincing him to give this interview: Mr. Mahapatra is an alumnus of my institute. When this particular opportunity came up to interview an industry leader, I connected with one of my good friends who, in turn, suggested that I interview Mr. Mahapatra. He assisted in getting connected with him. Thereafter, I went ahead and contacted him, and briefed him about the competition with a request to take out some time to do this interview. He was very accommodative and gladly agreed to help me. Q. One incident from your time in college/B-School that helped shape your professional life? He recalled an incident when he just joined XIMB - one that involved him getting anxious while studying the subject accounting. The grade he attained was a shocker for him, as he had never expected to receive such low grade. He took it upon himself to work hard, learn all aspects of finance and to excel in the domain. Looking back he felt those long hours spent on the intimidating domain of finance helped him to develop a financial accounting package for the treasury and understand risk evaluation. Q. One passion of yours that helps you become better at your mainline career? He is passionate about keeping himself updated with all the trends in the industry by reading articles & magazines, attending conferences, doing certifications and networking with as many people as from different industries. He stresses the importance of networking as it helps him to get different perspectives from different types of people. Also, he loves travelling. Given his father was in the Army, he has travelled to around 22 states and during his consulting stint, he has travelled to around 8-9 countries. As per him, travelling helps to be more open-minded and to understand different culture as well as the human aspect behind the professional demeanour. Q. When you are looking for people in your team, apart from specific skills, what kind of attitudes and approaches do you look for in candidates? Curiosity, Enthusiasm and persistent are the three key attributes he looks for in a candidate. Also, he highlights how people who are flexible and eager to network built great careers. And as always, good communication skills and openness to learning go a long way too. My 3 major learnings about career and the corporate world from the interaction:
