A conversation with my senior “Abhas” that changed my approach to my life ahead at IIFT.
Abhas: So Aashay, I know you are here for your MBA but tell me why.
Aashay : Honestly, high paying job. Why else would one go through the rigour of a B-School?
Abhas (chuckles): Is that it?
Aashay : Well, studying in a multicultural class and building connections in the corporate world are additional reasons but getting a job that remunerates in accordance with my intellect is the main reason I am here.
Abhas: Hmm. I get that but that is very myopic. Let me present a different view on how you should go on about your MBA journey that you are about to begin. Did u notice how Universities abroad churn out better MBA's than the Indian institutes? That is because the students there primarily go to educate themselves, enhance their skills, identify their limitations and work on them and most importantly, learn from other's mistakes; be it from case studies or experiences of their peers. Only then, they feel they are worth the degree that will be the suffix to their name for the rest of their life. They do not have any placement drives in the campus, instead, they apply to the companies and beat the competition based on their merits and therefore their focus is always on developing themselves than just honing the skills required to secure job from the campus drive.
Aashay : I agree but I have paid a huge tuition fee here and the burden of education loan is why my focus is in honing myself for the corporate world and securing a job first. I intend to make the most of the opportunities available here in terms on education and peer-to-peer learning but since you asked me my reason for being here, I gave you the primary one which is to secure a fairly remunerating job.
Abhas: Try and focus on the learning and not running the rat race. Develop yourself and you will end up with a job much better than your expectations. Widen your horizons and stop worrying about the loan. Don't let it cloud your judgement. Remember that IIFT is a B-School and not a placement agency.
