“If your first instinct is to run away from failures, then perhaps you are doing it the wrong way!”- This is Kumar Mangalam Birla’s way to deal with the failures and it just keeps me motivated throughout the day. I believe that every child deserves the right to education, but there are millions who never get that chance. Inspired by the Aditya Birla Group’s initiative of educating tribal population in Doraguda, I began teaching underprivileged children in my college. The children of the construction workers, the slum dwellers, who work tirelessly building our future but themselves are unable to build a future for their own children. The biggest challenge was to break through the boundaries of social norms, and encourage the parents to send their children to us. In due course of time, we realised that children would come to the classes provided they have the necessary support system. Our education system has predominantly focused on recitation of facts, instead of nurturing of thinking process. At Akshargyan, we tried to inculcate learning with fun, in a manner most acceptable by the children, talking about cricket, independence day, basic sanitation practices and hygiene. Each child was unique - a little bundle of joy with immense potential. I was so happy to have been able to bring a big change in the life of these children by such a small act. It’s true that anybody can change the world, all it takes is the first step."Our values provide us with roots & they provide us with our wings". Aditya Birla Group has indeed been BIG in my life by being a constant source of inspiration. While we all continue to work in our own small ways, we need to remember a lot needs to be done.
