Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSoM) had the privilege of hosting Mr. Shekhar Bhandari, Senior Executive Vice President & Business Head - Global Transaction Services and Precious Metals, Kotak Mahindra Bank on November 7, 2019. A Chartered Accountant with all-India 25th rank, he has over two decades of experience leading a vast multitude of functions in the finance industry. Mr. Bhandari joined Kotak Mahindra Bank in 1996, a few years after its IPO. He has been part of Kotak’s incredible journey where it today stands tall as India’s second-largest bank by market capitalization.
Keeping abreast with the latest trends, Mr. Bhandari delivered a riveting session on “Demystifying Economy and Financial Technology”. He encouraged students to see trends instead of mere numbers, and with the help of graphs and caricatures, he analyzed current trends in the global economy and their similarity with the 2008 financial crisis. Thereafter, his analysis took a deeper dive into the Indian economy, a detailed sector-wise breakup, and the long-term consumption and disruption themes that would shape the Indian economy in the future. He also predicted technologies like AI, Blockchain, and Quantum Computing to play a significant role in bringing about wholesale changes in the banking industry. He also shed light on the upcoming Blockchain ecosystem in India that is being driven by a consortium of banks. He shared some examples of the effect and impact technology is creating in making our world a better place, and how China has been able to leverage these new technologies to improve their quality of daily life.
The students of VGSoM were left in awe in the presence of such a tall personality as they listened attentively to Mr. Bhandari. He left a lasting impression on our budding managers as he eloquently answered all questions posed by the students. He truly inspired the hundreds of inquisitive minds in an interaction they will always look back for insights.
