It has just been over a year now since I joined Indian Institute of Management, Rohtak. It took a lot of sleepless nights and uncompromised efforts to ace the CAT and receive interview calls from the coveted Indian Institutes of Management only to realize that my journey to converting an IIM was only halfway through. Post the long and tiring though exalting WAT and interview process, on 22
nd of May 2017 what I finally received was probably the best of e-mails I could have ever received in my life, a mail asking for my confirmation of a seat for the post graduate programme (2017-2019) at IIM Rohtak. Having been working with an IT firm back then I gave in my resignation to be processed by my expected date of joining. Getting all the formalities done with I embarked upon a journey which would turn out to be one of the best events of my life.
It was the late hours of June 28
th 2017 and the coming day was the day to complete my registration process and get started with the what I once dreamt of. ‘the PGP course in management at an IIM’. The day I first went to the IIM Rohtak campus was 29
th of June. To start with, I was flabbergasted by the vast lush green campus and the fulfilling infrastructure of the college.
On the first day itself, we were provided with a hard copy of a business case to be read and prepared with for our first class scheduled on 30
th. Like most of my other colleagues, I did read the case but not trouble myself with calculations. The first lecture scheduled was to be instructed by Dr. Chetan Soman, a permanent faculty from IIM Ahmadabad, a veteran from the operations stream having experienced both in teaching and operations consulting for probably more years than what the average age of our batch was. The lecture started at the tick it was supposed and so started a couple of rounds of role-play based on the business case. The professor had set up the energy in the lecture so high that it almost felt like being part of a firm and already solving a live problem in the classroom itself. Typical sessions at IIM Rohtak are 75 minutes long, but as the lecture proceeded we felt as if we had run short of time. There were a lot of learnings from the class, the most important being trying to walk in someone else’s shoes before coming to a conclusion. In any and all business cases a decision must be made, and once you have gone through a simulation of what the stakeholders have gone through the process just comes more intuitively to you. That lecture made me look forward to the classes to come and fuelled the desire to learn as much as possible in the institute.
My dream ABG
Prior to joining IIM Rohtak, I used to work as a system engineer at Tata Consultancy Services, which has instilled a liking towards IT and communication technology in me. I would like to work for Idea Cellular as it one of the biggest and the most sought-after Telecom companies in India. I think I would be better able to synergize my passion and my work if I get to work in this firm.
