Life always used to be simple when one is at school. But once we are out of school there are always expectations, responsibilities and there will be many questions posed in front of you to choose a career path. My life was nothing different. I used to take decisions based upon what my parents expected out of me but not what I wanted. Therefore, I have appeared for competitive exams such as IIT, AIEEE, BITS etc. I emerged as All India chemistry topper in some of the mock exams that these colleges conducted, but in the final JEE exam I could only managed to get EML (Extended Merit List) against my expectations. From then on I started
complaining about my life as if I am the only person burdened with problems. After completing my B.Tech, I started working in TCS. During this stint I happened to gain interest towards business models that various companies adopted, marketing stunts adopted by various companies to keep their products on top and success stories of several startups. At the same time I was unable to understand the intricacies behind every strategic move that a company or a business man takes. All the curiosities instilled interest in me to pursue MBA (decision taken on my own)
I set myself a goal of pursuing MBA from a premium B-school for which am rejoiced that I have achieved. During the process of preparing for the competitive exams such as CAT, NMAT, XAT etc there were various challenges that I had encountered:
- Financial problems that my family was facing
- Concentrating on my competitive exams was difficult since I was working simultaneously, so maintaining work life balance was challenging for me
- My sister was struggling to find a good job
- Was having tough time maintaining good relationship with my friends
All these problems used to trouble me a lot mentally. I understood that complaining about the problems doesn't get me anywhere. So one thing I kept in my mind was to stay strong and not get succumbed to these challenges because there is a very high chance that I might lose out the time I had, if I miss out on that, I will have to wait for an year for another opportunity. My only strategy was to take a step by step rational decision but not take decisions on the whole. I made sure I maintained my cool head irrespective of the circumstances I was in to.
Overcoming challenges is always going to be a daunting task for anyone. There will always be serious questions posed to us whether the decision we are taking is going to be right or not. But what I have learnt out of my experiences is to stay strong, believe in the decision I take and not look back. There will always be people who will be talking behind and demotivating us but its important that we only concentrate on our work and not anything else. That’s what I have done and that’s the success mantra for me. In the end I could achieve what I have dreamt of (studying in a premium B-school) and similarly I had overcome all my other problems with the mantra I have believed in.
