GATE exam (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is a computer-based standardized test conducted at the national level in India with an aim to examine the understanding of various engineering and science undergraduate subjects. Qualifying in the GATE exam is a mandatory requirement for the engineering graduates who are seeking admissions and/or financial assistance to the Postgraduate Programs like Masters and Doctoral with the Ministry of Education (MoE) and other Government Scholarships / Assistantships that are subject to the admission criteria’s of the institutes.
GATE exam results are also used by some of the Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) for their recruitment and by several other universities in India and abroad for admissions. Some of the PSU Companies and research organizations that use the GATE exam results for providing jobs include ONGC, NTPC, GAIL, HPCL, PGCIL, BHEL, BSNL, HPCL, NHPC, BARC, DRDO, and more.
GATE examination is an all-India exam that’s administered and conducted in eight zones across the country jointly by the following institutes on behalf of National Coordination Board-GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India.
I am Ravi Kiran Das a Chemical Engineering alumnus of NIT Rourkela, the batch of 2017. I am currently working at Vedanta Limited. I have secured AIR 81 in GATE 21.
Taking out time from my busy schedule was a tough job, I have a job where I need to go in shifts and have to take time accordingly for preparation despite having uneven sleeping and eating patterns. I used to give an average of 2 hours daily for my preparation and have focused initially on clearing my concepts. GATE is not a tough exam rather is a very easy and basic exam where one need not remember formulae but the basis of the subject they are appearing for. To be honest, I started my preparation in mid-September, though it was my 5th attempt and was very familiar with the pattern, I made my own strategy and as previously mentioned had cleared concepts till December end. I started giving mocks ( EII being a nice platform for mocks) at starting of January and had given a maximum of 8-10 mocks where I secured 60-65 marks on an average, though that didn't break my confidence as I was well aware of the exam.
One caveat that I would like to give is GATE unlike CAT has dynamic options of getting into a PSU, an IIT/NIT for M Tech of NITIE for PGDIE, try to follow last year question and be thorough with your concepts and try to clear it within 2-3 years of undergrad pass out as the number of options reduces with subsequent years
I am Rima Raj. An undergrad from Rv College Of Engineering in the stream Electronics and Instrumentation (2016-2020). Currently, I am pursuing my PGDM from NITIE Mumbai. I secured AIR 96 in GATE 2020 in the Instrumentation Engineering branch.
1) Make a schedule to cover your syllabus till November in any event. Attempt to cover greatest weightage subjects appropriately and address your doubts.
2) Solve full-length mock tests after you have covered practically 80% of the prospectus and take them seriously.
3) Don't lose trust in the event that you get low scores in the mock tests as they will simply assist you with improving.
4) Fight till the end as just the exam day score matters.
Some Pointers:
1) Be an early bird, start your preparation early
2) Have all concepts clear, try to solve numerous questions.
3) Have a Positive mentality and battle till the end.
All the best!
