“Great businesses are never built on the quicksands of opportunism. I reiterate that, if living by our values means, perhaps growing at a pace slower than we would otherwise have liked, so be it. For us, leadership lies at the heart of knowing what we stand for
”- These are the words of one of the most vibrant and shrewd Chairman
Kumar Mangalam Birla. These words are the perfect fit for today’s scenario where companies are struggling to maintain their values.
Aditya Birla Group (ABG) is in the league of Fortune 500 with approx. $44 Billion corporations. This group contains around 12000 employees belonging to different nationalities. I would strongly agree with the fact that wherever we go, it is very rare that we can see a product/services of Aditya Birla. ABG has set up its business in almost every field either by expanding the business or acquiring the business.
There is a root connection we have with ABG in every field. I vividly remember when I bought my first SIM for phone and it was idea cellular service (one of telecom business of ABG). There are various brands in fashion such as Allen Solly, Vanheusen, Pantaloon, Fashion Planet, Peter England and many more that ABG has owned. Initially, I was not aware of Idea cellular service or pantaloon or fashion planet are part of ABG.
Moreover, ABG has various arms in Financial Services and insurance as well. ABG is the largest supplier of copper to Indian railway. We have UltraTech Cement that we are seeing from childhood. Aditya Birla Group as consolidation has shown the way how a business should be run. Apart from businesses that ABG has, the group has a sustainable CSR segment as well that work in the welfare of society by keeping the business value at large.
Challenges that I have faced and how I tackled them...
Being a Hindi Medium student, I faced a lot of problem in the college where I saw almost everyone has an English tag on them. There was a time when I started to feel inferior to others. I used to hesitate when it comes to participation and due to nil participation made me under-confidence. But at the core, I knew that I have to tackle this huge barrier I had.
Just to eradicate this problem, I took initiation to make a group of like-minded people. I gave this a name TIE (talk in English) session. We used to walk down the road after dinner and had a discussion on any type of topic. It not only gave me the confidence to speak but also gave a hope that someday I become a good public speaker.
There is a couple of initiation I inculcated to improve my communication style before joining Toastmaster international, a public speaking forum. This club has given me an edge to improve further.
Overall this story always shows me my potential that how I can mold myself even in the tough circumstances. This is one of my impactful stories that will probably inspire others.
