Our ability to handle life’s challenges is a measure of our character but apart from that I also believe that our perspective to challenging situation measures how we handle these challenges. It is up to you whether you want to crib about empty glass or grab that opportunity to fill up the remaining glass.
One such life-changing challenging situation I encountered when I was transferred to an Aluminum manufacturing firm in Chattisgarh. It was a PSU earlier and later acquired by one the largest business group during a disinvestment drive by the government in 2001. My subordinates were workmen who were working from PSU period and still followed that working methodology. Earlier it was difficult for me to manage and coordinate with them as they were not ready to follow a 22-year-old who has just graduated from college. My seniors advised me to follow a hard taskmaster route but I decided to follow a different route. I started working on building a trusting relationship which was lacking earlier. I started a practice of "5-minute safety talks" every day just before starting the shift. In these talks, we discussed safety practices and standard operating procedure for the tasks pending for that day. This made them realize that I also cared for their safety which helped in building trust. We also collaborated in many Quality circle and Kaizens in which we presented small changes we had done in process improvement.
I took that challenge as an opportunity instead of a hurdle and came out a better person with increased self-belief.
How ABG Has Had An Impact On My Life
Aditya Birla Group was founded in 1957 coincidentally in the same year when the quest for Indian independence began. From then its journey in economic history goes along with India’s journey from freedom struggle to become the 6th largest economy in the world.
Today ABG is one the largest conglomerate in India with business in over 14 industrial sectors, spread across 36 countries employing about 120,000 people.
I have been associated with the Aditya Birla group directly or indirectly in every stage of my life. First sim card used by me was of IDEA and I still remember its television ad with catching tagline “What an IDEA sirji” endorsed by Abhishek Bachchan.
Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail is a destination for me whenever I need to go shopping for clothes. I prefer its brand such as Van Heusen and Louis Phillipe for formal wear whereas, for casual wear Peter England, Allen Solly is best. Pantaloons combine many brands under a single roof which is dream come true for people like me who prefer fast shopping.
I worked with the second largest Aluminum manufacturer in the country for nearly three years. Policies of the company which I worked with was always influenced by HINDALCO which is India's largest Aluminum manufacturer. Therefore it is safe to say that HINDALCO has impacted my work life indirectly.
I am one of million Indians who are touched by Aditya Birla group from the last 160 years which also signifies outreach of this mega business group.
