The finance fanatics of IIM Indore, Mumbai campus received some valuable insights into the dynamics of investment banking as Mr. Devang Mehta, Senior Vice President & Head- Equity Advisory at BNP Paribas Wealth Management, delivered a lecture on the Evolution of Capital Markets.
With over 16 years of experience, Mr. Mehta is a savant in the areas of equity advisory, portfolio management, client relationship management and business development. He has previously been associated with Angel Broking and Anand Rathi Securities, and has represented his companies on electronic media like CNBC TV18, CNBC Awaaz, ET Now, Bloomberg UTV, NDTV Profit, and Zee Business.
Beginning with the trading methods of the 19th century, Mr. Mehta spoke about the advent of NSE and BSE, and how share trading has evolved from physical share certificates to demat accounts. Deeming India as a high growth destination, he went on to highlight Indian market’s strength and stability, and how the excellent regulation and process surveillance measures have been a contributor to the same.
He further discussed different methods of securities’ evaluation- technical, fundamental, and quantitative analysis, the different approaches employed in each analysis (e.g. top-down, bottom-up), and the various factors responsible for volatility of capital markets.
The session ended with a highly interactive Q&A session, where Mr. Mehta advised the participants regarding various career options available in investment banking. He also urged them to understand the industry, weigh the risks vs. rewards, and take calculated risks.
